Volvo Repair Database Getting ready for PCV job: special tools recommendations?

Post by plumsmooth »

I originally had bought one on sale on eBay but realized it was all URO parts and couldn't bring myself to keep it.
Lost shipping money sent it back and got a genuine volvo kit.

I trying to gather my tools.

Seems I need a 10 inch extension. 1/4?
Swivel 10mm socket or wobble extension?

I have a 12mm Ratchet wrench which will hopefully get the two lower manifold bolts?

Should a get a 1/4 torque wrench for the upper manifold bolts.

Anything else that anyone can think of that I might be missing I would appreciate it.

I think I need a torx 30 for the spark plugs.

I've read though many posts but can't say I have seen one simple list of the basic tools needed.

Thanks again...

I use a 10mm 1/4 flex socket with a 8 inch extension works great for the manifold bolts.

The 12MM ratchet wrench for the oil tube and braket should work well. Keep track of what bolt goes where as the are different lengths.

Does the service kit you got have a gasket for the throttle body? Take plenty of pictures of your vacuum lines and hose routing on the rear of the engine.

your spark plug cover bolts should be a T-25 IIRC

yes 1/4 drive long extension or socket and u-joint on long 3/8 extension for the bolt behind the P/S pump.

These are things that you will find many uses for, basic tool kit stuff, you will consider them "special" for a different reason later.

Fun watching people (and their cars) come along here!

1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I highly recommend the 9 pc wobble socket extension set from Harbor freight. There are a few bolts, esp on the manifold that are an absolute pita without them.

Right now I have a 3/8 ratchet to 3 inch extension to U-joint to reducer to 1/4 10mm socket.

What you can see is that my swivel is 2.5 inches back from the tip of socket.

Really I am just trying to decide if I am ready to attempt this this weekend.

My local auto store in town has 3/8 extensions and probably a 3/8 10mm socket but no swivel 10mm socket or 1/4 inch extensions.

You could hit Lowes in Burlington for the Kobal 1/4 inch extensions and wobbles

T30 for the spark plug cover

10mm swivel socket works great on the manifold bolts. 1/4" drive preferred, long extension, I have 10" (I wish!)

regular 10mm socket and a 2" to 4" extension

12mm socket

side cutting pliers to remove the hose clamps, you can install them too if you're careful

new o-ring for the oil dipstick tube

If you plan on removing the injectors from the rail, get all new o-rings and seals for them. I can and do remove the manifold on 850's with the injectors in the manifold. I disconnect the fuel line fitting (14mm/15mm wrenches ?)

Russ you could make your engine compartment more presentable by have both those fuel line clamp slotted screws both in the 9/3 O'clock position. Job well done!

Hey RussB you got quite the pictures. Do you happen to have any to help me identify the location of the 2 12mm lower manifold bolt? Thanks...

Hey, Should I order a swivel Socket set for 30 Bucks and a 1/4 extension set?

Or can I make due with a 3/8 Socket, U-Joint, and a reducer or not... and a regular 3/8 or 1/4 10mm socket?

P.S. I ordered one of these:

Feel up under the manifold directly behind the oil dip stick.
