Your 2001-2002 with auto tranny - issues?

Post by Volvo2112 »

Tell me about your 2001-2002 with auto that has not had issues. Or, do they ALL break?

My 2001 S60 T-5 with 119,000 miles has had no issues. I bought it in 2007 with 73,000 miles and have done two drain and fills with 12 quarts of Mobil JWS 3309 fluid each. Plus I installed an inline filter from IPD. I changed the filter at 12,000 miles per IPDs recommendation. I had the local dealership remove the stop/neutral feature soon after I bought it. I'm sure it will eventually break but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

They all have issues eventually. Especially the T5 and AWD cars. It's not 'some' it's all. The early AW55 cars eat themselves (literally) when stopped in drive. That's why all highway driven cars don't have tranny issues at higher miles--they're not in traffic all the time. Get ready to get a new tranny eventually or get an M66/M56 and swap it. Might be hard to find an M66 because the M66 is designed to accommodate an angle-gear for the S60/V70R and only the late model T5 cars got the M66 FWD at least in America.

Have you ever heard the old addage that changing the ATF can ruin an older car? Where did that "wisdom" come from?

Waffleshill: Throwing it in neutral and back would help it?? Using sport mode? My 911 stops in 2nd and never shifts to first. Does the Volvo T5 do that?

There was a software update to remove the feature. A dealer will be able to tell if it was done. The ATF change thing came from a lot of transmissions being toasted after a powerflush. Drain and fill only.

As mentioned above, if the owner replaced the fluid even on higher miles such as 80,000 and removed the neutral stop in time and replaced the T4 cover, then maybe the 2001-2002 transmission may last. There's is also a chance to find a car that had the transmission already replaced.
