2001 xc70 rear compartment relays and lighting problems

Post by heatherw »

Hi, I found some diagrams on here for the rear relays for the v70 but they all list everything as RMxx and mine doesn't have the R. All of the ports are just listed MA1, etc. Everything looks the same configuration though. Are these the same or is there a diagram for relays without the R in front?

Second question, I'm trying to chase down a taillight problem. My car has a single relay in the MI5 and MI6 slots. I've searched for the part number (9494782) and have found posts saying to replace it with two V08651661, but I've also seen a post that said that was incorrect and it should be V30765030 in the MI5 slot and V08651661 in the MI6 slot. Can anyone confirm which of these is the correct solution?

I also no front turn signal on the same side that I have a taillight out (left.) I've checked all the fuses in the driver's side dash fuse compartment. Is there a relay for those as well, or any suggestions on where to go next on that?

Thanks,
Heather

The rear body modules fail on these XCs as did mine on my 2001 XC. Mine was totally offline and non communicative with Vida. Others fail in sections The repair involves removing all relays and fuses then undoing the 10mm bolt on the wiring harness to reveal the tabs that allow the REM cartridge to slide out.

If you connect Vida you will probably have REM codes.

Well, now I'm completely confused. I thought I'd figured out from reading on here that relays 5 and 6 are the possible suspects for taillight problems. Last night I tried switching around relays and shunts and I didn't fix the problem or create new problems. I used other relays (verified to be good by trying it in the brake light socket) to replace the double 9494782 relay. They were the 8651661 relay. But the weird part was I even completely removed relays 5 and 6 at the same time and I still had taillights on the right side. Did I read something incorrectly?

I'm checking the lights while the switch is in the "O" position, which I've read here is DRL mode, and is how I always have it set when I drive it.

Not sure if it matters, but figured I would note I do have a working brake light and the fog light on the left side, just not taillights. All rear lights work (including license plate) besides the left side taillights (both sockets) and the front turn signal. I guess I should also verify high beam function. I never use them so I'm not sure. The computer is aware of the problem because I get multiple bulb failure and turn signal failure messages. I have verified all bulbs to be good by swapping with the working right side. My only other rear failure is the tailgate lock. But it does lock, it just doesn't unlock. So I don't think that's an electrical signal issue?

precopster, thank you. I'll do some reading on the body module. I'm also going to try the battery reset procedure. From a quick search I found a couple people saying that fixed their REM problems. I'm not usually that lucky but still worth a try!

Any suggestions where to start on the front turn signal problem? Since the fuse is good do I go to checking power at the socket next or is there something to check between the fuse and the bulb?

Thanks,
Heather

Yep I should have mentioned that a battery reset with ignition in PosII (yes you read that right) will cure 95% of REM module issues. This used to work for me when rear locks and sunroof went offline.

The turn signal is probably just a coincidental thing. The connection at the globe sometimes fatigues and a break occurs within the wire. A pick and pull wire soldered in its place should sort it out. Because the break is right at the connector the best place to check voltage is to stab the wire with a voltage checker and it will likely have voltage along its length.

Thank you again, Mike. I'll mess around with it this weekend and let you know how it goes. Hopefully I can figure it out. The lighting gremlin is really the only thing keeping the car from being 100% awesome.

Well, no luck trying the battery removal/install in pos II.

Does anyone have any input on the question about when I removed relays 5 and 6 I still had right taillights? I thought one of those relays controlled the tails? Am I mistaken, or has someone possibly rigged it and wired the lights differently, or any other ideas?

This issue unfortunately has taken a backseat. I was trying to get this car back on the road after parking it for 9 months, but I keep running into more problems. I replaced the bad lower trans mount, upper mount, and the alternator. Now that it's back on the road it appears I have problems with the ETM. Ordered the gasket. Going to try cleaning it and see if that helps the problem. Love this car so much but if I can't get her running right I'm going to have to let it go. :(

What type of lubricant are you supposed to use on the o-rings on the throttle body? I keep seeing references to lubricating it but doesn't say with what. I'll post this in another thread if I don't get an answer here, I know you're not supposed to combine issues into one post.
