1999 V70 XC VVT exhaust timming move CW or CCW

Post by witenite »

I have a 1999 V70 XC with turbo. Did a valve job and now it won't go over 3000 RPM. I get code P0014 bank 1 timing over advanced. So it looks like I got the exhaust VVT wrong. Should I turn the cam clockwise or counter clockwise? 1,2, or 3 teeth?
Thanks.

had the same problem on a 2000 V70... I moved the cam counter clockwise one tooth. After getting it put together I manually turned the crank to ensure all was well. My logic was the engine turns clock wise. Cam rotation was advanced, so retarding cam one tooth unadvanced cam.

I cannot answer 1,2 or 3 teeth on the cam. one tooth did it for me.

Direction is right but are you following the preload procedure for VVT timing belt replacement?

When I did mine I turned the crank clockwise several rotations then 90 degrees further clockwise, then turned crank counter clockwise 90 degrees to line up cam timing marks. When I redid the the belt I again followed those steps and again locked the cam's at the back of the engine. I then marked the belt and the tooth, pulled belt off the cam and rotated cam one tooth counter clockwise. I still wonder how I came off one tooth. 98 and earlier were so easy.

It could be either and you need to be a bit careful since you could go to far in one direction or another and be facing another top end rebuild.

Did you remove the CVVT hub from the exhaust cam when you did the rebuild? If so, you lost all reference since the CVVT hub is not keyed to the camshaft. The only way to recover is to the cam adjustment tool and it needs to be a good one rather than a home brew angle iron version since the torque on the torx screw that secures the hub to the cam is so high, around 90 ft. lbs. as I recall. From there you set the timing on the sprocket one tooth counter-clockwise to start.

If you did not remove the hub then things are easy. You just go through the timing belt change preload procedure which is to set the timing marks to their marks, rotate back to the timing marks by hand clockwise and then continue 90 degrees further. From there go back counter clockwise to the marks.

Once the cams are back to their marks remove the timing belt across the camshaft sprockets and then thread it back on. As you go across the exhaust cam set the the timing mark on the outer sprocket to the 12:00 reference position and set your tension. It always takes me two or three times to get the tension fine tuned after I start the engine.

Thanks Ozark Lee.
I did not remove the CVVT hub from the exhaust cam. I did not set the timing mark back to the 12:00 position. So if I have the timing marks lined up I should be able to turn the cam back to the 12:00 position and it will be correct.

I will turn it over by hand several times to make sure the valves clear.

It should be easy for you. Just go past 90 degrees clockwise beyond the mark and then back. After you remove the timing belt across the cam sprockets the sprocket part of the CVVT hub will turn independently from the hub itself. Just set that sprocket to the mark and you should be good to go.

I must have been lucky , I have done our timing belt and rebuilt two heads no issue each time fired right up first try. I just redid the exhaust camshaft on both ends including a vvt end, new timing belt new water pump . It started fine but I did get the p0014 code. Thanks Lee for the tip I have never set it back one tooth but must have gotten lucky. I too agree on using the quality cam locking tool, after breaking a homemade one. At least the oil leaks are gone!
