2001 V70XC Volvo mesh pet barrier

I recently acquired the Volvo mesh pet/ cargo barrier for my v70xc. After I installed, my dog was able to squeeze through the gaps on the sides of the mesh. Anyone know of anything I could do to fill in those gaps so my dog can't get by? He's not a small dog either, hahaha
