1988 Volvo 760 Turbo Intercooler Wagon Brake Lines

Post by lummert »

Anyone know the proper brake line routing between the master cylinder and ABS hydraulic module? While installing a Ford master cylinder during my front brake upgrade I may have have installed the brake lines between the master cylinder and the ABS module incorrectly. It seems that the rear brakes are doing most of the braking, and I have perfect brakes when braking in reverse. My car is a 1988 Volvo 760 Turbo wagon with disabled ABS.

Apparently a proportioning valve for rear drum brakes doesn't work well with 4 wheel disc brakes. I removed the guts from the Ford Brake Pressure Control Valve and reinstalled it back in the master cylinder rear brake port. I now have brakes.

Maybe I should explain what I've done. Car is 1988 Volvo 760 Turbo Intercooler Wagon with ABS. First I did the Jumbo Brake Upgrade on the front. I ruined the master cylinder seals while bleeding the brakes. I then reclocked the brake booster to accept a 940/960 master cylinder. My budget doesn't leave room for much so I decided to use a Ford truck master cylinder which are plentiful in my friends junkyard. The ford truck master cylinder has a brake pressure control valve screwed into the rear brake outlet of the master cylinder.

With the master cylinder w/control valve installed I had so-so brakes going forward and pressing the pedal harder resulted in the front wheels locking up. Braking in revverse resulted in really good brakes.

I started reading up on the control valve and learned that on the Ford F-350 Super Duty with rear disc brakes the rear brake control valve is straight through. I removed the guts from the control valve and reinstalled it on the master cylinder. I now have brakes.

This master cylinder is used from 1987 on the full size Bronco, E150-E350, F150-F350. I comes is bore sizes ranging from 1in. to 1-3/8in.
