New ABS...

Post by wolf »

My ABS control module on my 1999 S70 has come to its end. I have read about the service that Victor does to rebuild the ABS modules and it sounds great, and cheap, compaired to a 900 dollar quote from the dealership and a 650 dollar quote from a local volvo mechanic!!! I am 17 years old, and my parents have decided that the new ABS module is the last thing they will ever pay for to repair the car, so i could easily just take it in and drop 650 bucks to have it fixed in a day, but I am looking out for my parents and i want to save them money. For some reason, my dad does not like the idea of sending my abs unit out to california and waiting a week to get it back from a service he does not know much about, and also, i need my car to get to work, so not having it for a week is a pretty big deal. I am not the most handy person in the world, but do you think if i bought a new ABS unit, would I still be saving money compaired to paying $600, and is it a pretty easy install, even in a turbo? I checked FCP and they don't have any 1999 S70 ABS control units for sale, does anyone know where i might be able to pick one up and still be saving some money compaired to $600?

Thank you so much!

Josh

I would use Victor's service, but I know it's not all your decision. I have used him as have many others with very good results. You ship him the module and a money order for $140 which covers the repair and the shipping. You can still drive your car with the module removed, but you lose the BAS function (which you don't have anyway if the light is on) and the speedometer and odometer. Buying the module and doing it yourself doesn't make a whole lot of sense because the labor for the entire swap of the module is around 30 minutes. Most of the cost is in the part. You could have your indi mechanic remove the module and you could ship it to Victor and have the indi install it upon it's return. You could also do the repair yourself following victor's instructions and pictures. You will need the E5 Torx socket to do the repair. Victor sells them as well for 6 bucks or so.

Tell your father from a 60 year old to save money and send it to Victor. (You CAN drive the car while the unit is out of the car)

Print this thread out for your father. Victor has been doing this repair for years and I've never seen or heard of anyone complain about him. I had mine repaired last year. Sent it out on Monday afternoon and it was back on Friday afternoon....now that's service. I only missed it for 4 days. My speedo didn't work but I figured out my speed on my interstate commute to work by the rpm's on my dash so I stayed under the speed limit. Anyway, again, print this all out and show your father. Maybe that will convince him. Sure beats paying $900, or even $600 and in my opinion, Victor's repair is better than what the dealer gives you as a replacement. Victor not only repairs, but he rebuilds, and in many cases "beefs" up the ones that he gets. I've never heard of one that he's done breaking again. By the way, I'm 47 and a principal of a high school....

Do it. I used the guy on e-bay (modulemasters.com) and the work came out great. My ABS and trac light are out and all functions are restored. Super easy DIY job too. My car's a V70R and I did not have to remove any fluid lines. Save them some money. Wish my kid thought like you :-)
