2001 V70 T5 - Wouldn't rev above 2200rpm, now won't start

Post by 2ManyVolvos »

New poster here, but a long time reader...MVS has helped me out alot! I had to post this because I can't find these exact symptoms elsewhere.

My wife calls today and says she can't go over 40 on the interstate. She safely limps home. I come home to troubleshoot and find the idle very erratic and I can't get the engine to rev above 2200 rpm floored in neutral (this is a manual car with 160k miles). If I let it idle for more than 5-10 seconds, it will die. No CEL or fault codes. I suspected low fuel pressure, but it is reading 50+psi at the fuel rail. After I disconnected the fuel pressure gauge, it will crank, but now it won't start at all (it hits a little, but not enough to start). I cleaned the MAF-nothing, I disconnected the MAF-nothing. I checked the intake, intercooler, and visible vacuum hoses-nothing looked out of sorts.

Some recent history on this car: Over a month ago, the ETM got so bad that I had to fix it. It had blown a fuse and the idle was getting worse. It was also very jerky on acceleration. I ordered a ETM kit from ARD Tuning (Hall Effect TPS conversion). The rebuild went well and it fixed the idle and blown fuse issues, but it still was jerky on acceleration. Then I replaced the TCV and the vacuum hoses to it and that pretty much smoothed out the jerky acceleration. Wow this is the best this car had ever driven since we've had it...until today...now I'm stumped.

To me this sounds like the ETM problem again, and i'm sure you have checked the fuses but I know a lot of people forget about them especially when something major happens and jump to conclusions on what needs to be repaired but could be as simple as fuse

I'll check that fuse again when I get home. When it blew last time, before I rebuilt the ETM, the throttle didn't work at all. I guess the most frustrating thing about this is that it isn't throwing any codes at all.

Ok - sure enough the fuse was blown. Sometimes you get caught up looking everywhere but the obvious places. I replaced it and was able to start the car and throttle was back....until it blew again in about a minute. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that the simple ETM repair just doesn't fix. Reading back through (again) the ETM thread on MVS, it looks like about 1 in 4 ETMs have more problems than just the bad TPS. I'll be placing an order to XeMODex today. Yayy.

On the bright side you aren't throwing parts at it, you've got a firm diagnosis.

Installed the XeMODeX ETM this weekend and the car is running great. I guess the rebuild kits are great for ETMs that only have TPS issues...mine was more than that (a short somewhere or a bad motor). I think I might start to finally like this car.
