'00 VR Flashing climate control lights/erractic temp gauge

Post by brickhead »

Good Evening all.

I had the flashing climate control lights issue for some time now. It seems to be more frequent now since the weather is changing. Can someone please tell me why when the cc lights are flashing, my temperature gauge malfunctions or will immediately fall down to cold position? When the cc lights are not flashing and working properly, the temperature gauge will go back to its normal resting place.
I've replaced the thermostat and coolant temp. sensor when i had the head machined and replaced burnt exhaust valves this past April. Also replaced the usual stuff. Water pump, timing belt, tensioner etc.while i was in there.

Thank you.

If you get a VOL-FCR scanner, you can get the climate control codes. I'm probably way off, but it might be the heater core.

Unplug the ECC dash unit and go for a drive.
Watch the temp gauge and see if it remains stable.
If the needle holds steady while the controller is
sitting on the passenger seat, plug in a replacement.

Thanks for the response BEJinFbk. Couple of more ??

1 Where is the dash unit located?

2 Are you talking about the sensor to the left of the climate control unit?

The one above the radio with the three knobs. It's the brain of the ECC system.
My thought is that it may have a problem that's interfering with the engine temp
signal from the main ECU that splits and feeds both the gauge and the ECC.

Pull the radio ( be sure you have it's security code if you unplug it! ),
reach up and push the ECC module out of the dash. Unplug it and take
your temp gauge out for a test run. Hopefully, it'll hit 3:00 and stay there.
