1994 Volvo 855T which O2 sensor to buy?

Post by azureblue »

My front O2 sensor is kaput, so I went on the web to look for a replacement. If my info is right, I can use a universal (stick with Bosch) replacement, as long as I do not solder, use crimp joints and shrink wrap the connection. Feel free to disagree.......

But then I happened by Bosch's website and they said that the old "thimble" style sensor, #13373, has been upgraded to a planar sensor, #15727, so I should use that.

Input?

Thanks in advance.....

Either ought to work. I don't use the universal, but if you do, why not solder and shrink wrap the wire connections? then tape and silicone to waterproof the whole joint. Just asking.

I read that the sensor has to "breathe" through the wire, and somehow, soldering (which I would prefer) prevents this. And something else about wire resistance. Neither makes any sense to me..... If it were me, I would interlace the ends of the wires, solder and shrink wrap.

Since I have another bad O2 sensor out of the car, I can use a universal.

I only know what I read regarding the solder, haven't done it myself ... Agreed, best to not solder but get the standard Bosch with OEM style connectors.

an explanation of the newer type planar sensors. It appears the planar type is better --

"the Planar sensor lights-off faster, in about 10 seconds, as opposed to 45 seconds for the thimble."

I have tried to solder the connections but the wire they use has a low copper content and it hates standard tin/lead solder. You can't really get the solder to flow. My guess is that the low copper content is due to the high heat and the heat in the area may actually melt solder anyway unless you use silver solder with a very small tip on a oxy / acetylene torch. The universals use a funky crimp type connection that isn't terribly reliable either.
