2013 S60 Tires to replace original Primacy MXM4s?

Post by s2zeller »

The MXM4s that came with car still have what should be usable tread (3/32" above the wear bars) after ~26k miles, but I'm beginning to wonder what driving will be like in this coming Wisconsin winter if we get any kind of snow (the last two have been moderate to light).

The reason I am wondering is that the car's rear went out on corners a few times on wet (i.e. after rain... not during) roadways (with newish blacktop) in the past 6 months. Perhaps I was taking them too aggressively but not any more so than usual.

Anyone else have experience with MXM4s?

I'm thinking about either Nokian WRG3 or Michelin Premier A/S. It is a bit of a tossup. I've had two Nokians (WRG2 and WRG3) develop sidewall bubbles well before warranty was up. On the other hand, I don't think I've ever had a Michelin get within 10k miles of their rating.

On snow and ice the Nokians will undoubtedly by like night and day compared with the all-season Michelin. I watched a few winter accidents in WI on Youtube. I'd get at least the Nokian all-weather and have peace of mind in winter (note the distinction between all weather and all season, all weather being designated winter tires that can be driver during the summer).

Nokian is where I was leaning (given past experience on an 850 wagon).
