2005 S40 TDC or Gear marks for timing belt

Post by volvoS40TAN »

Hi Volvo drivers
New to the forum here but I have been reading through intensively.
Recently I changed the head gasket of my 2005 S40 2.4i non turbo. However,I did not properly lock the cam gears when taking the time belt and now they are out of sync. :x
I was able to find the small notches on these cams but the marking on the crank pulley has been nearly impossible to find.
So I figured I could simply find the TDC by manually rotating the crank and inserting a long rod in cylinder 1. That way I could put the belt on when the crank reaches TDC. But I am not sure if the TDC for this car is also the same as the markings. Does anybody have knowledge on this issue? Is it atleast within a reasonable degree?
Thank you

I don't believe the cam gears have a timing mark. You are supposed to make your own reference mark with a sharpie before taking the belt off. If you didn't do this, you will have to get the cam lock tools to index the cams from the back.

The crank gear top dead center for sake of engine timing is notched into the gear. Not sure if it is true TDC though.

EDIT: this info is for 99-04. I misread the question.

I'm more familiar with a '01 S40, but I believe all the marks and/or notches on the cam gears or crank gear are TIMING marks on your engine. Not TDC.

Cylinder # 1 at TDC is not the proper timing location in relation to the other timing marks. It is close though. First thing is to find that mark on the crank gear. It will be very difficult to see. Be prepared to clean the area thoroughly to find it and its mate on the oil pump.

Then lock the camshafts.

Does your car have VVT on both camshafts? I believe you may have to pre-load those as well to get the timing correct. Not positive on that though since the '01 doesn't have the same style VVT as your engine.

Yea, it would have been a good idea to mark everything before pulling it apart, but too late now.

Welcome Aboard!

Here is a Timing Belt procedure from VIDA to help you find your timing marks.
If your engine is different from B5244S4 (the one referenced), let me know, I can pull the correct procedure for you

Thank you everyone for your thoughts.
Regent, thank you for the VIDA manual. It helped me find the notch on the crank teeth by using a flash light and shining on it from the engine mount area. It would be great if you could let me in where you found the manual.
