Hi Everyone,
I recently acquired an 04 S60 AWD with a leaking steering system, transfer case and with an internal coolant leak. I just took the engine/tranny/t.case out the car and noticed that the piston isn't TDC with the crank stop tool in place.
I did notice the grey paint marks on the block and pulley but I think they are meant to align the mark on the pulley with the block when the piston is manually adjusted to TDC.
Is it normal for a Piston to be slightly lower than TDC when the Crankshaft stop tool is in place?

Many engines no longer time at TDC. If no piston is at TDC then valve to piston contact when assembling engine will not occur. The offset position is also set so that the cams will be unloaded and will be less likely to move during timing belt service on engines with belts and also to aid in any service on timing chain engines.
TDC #1 was historically the place crank and cams were marked for timing but that no longer is universal and is less used with every new engine developed.
You are at the right position for assembly. The two crank gear location marks will be split by the pointer on engines with your style crank gear.
