1998 V70xc missing transfer case and driveshaft
When I bought this I was told the driveshaft went so no AWD, I was like I get a rebuilt unit. When after bring I find more missing than I was told. I took pics but all I have is the R/F CV axle with a big gear and the coupling to seal into trans. I've looked at diagrams but I don't see how or why this was done unless transfer case was shot and previous owner was being cheap.

This is the obvious answer. I must say, that is a fascinating method for holding the AWD drive collar between the transmission and the transfer case in place. My guess is that the transfer case was the root of the original problem.shiloh51933 wrote:I don't see how or why this was done unless transfer case was shot and previous owner was being cheap.
You will obviously need a prop shaft and the case to even try to get the AWD working again. I would test the viscous coupler first before you spend any more money on getting that part going again.

Agreed, much better than the hose clamp method I usually see.
Just like Lee said, your going to need a whole new angle gear and prop shaft. I'd make sure the viscous coupler is still in place and functional. I'd also check the rear diff for oil leaks and rear axles to make sure all the boots are in place before buying any parts.
You have a VIN break year so you'll want to make sure you get the correct side of it when you find replacements.

Haha,
The previous owner deserves a Nobel prize. The guy was very clever!!!
Anyway, personally I'd leave it alone.

I hear but if I can't have AWD, I'm getting rid of it. I paid $800 and everything works with exception of AWD, everything like a/c, all power options, foggees and I've replaced entire front end. Get a rebuilt or used transfer case, rebuilt or used drive shaft and few other items. I'm obviously doing labor myself so I think it's worth it. Your saying what, that's its a money pit? Our 04' XC70 is so good in snow/rain, so I figured I'd get a cross country but the 1st gen XC that has the body that I love from owning an 850.cn90 wrote:Haha,

Money pit absolutely. I discovered (after buying) that the driveshaft was missing. My independent mechanic as well as my mechanic at the Volvo dealership advised against it. Their reasoning that the new driveshaft would likely bring up other issues (with the dif, or the axle, or the transfer case). Although, when my mechanic told me this, he said I had "bigger fish to fry". I've fried the bigger fish and am so tempted.
There are a lot of factors to the replacement though. Robert DIY has a great video on the fix, he describes a procedure after installation that involves verifying that all wheels are spinning at precociously the same speed.
Honestly, considering you only spent 800 on the car, if I were you, I'd consider throwing the cash at it.

The only problem here is that you can't really verify that the viscous coupling is functioning properly without having the driveshaft and a properly working angle gear installed.
I'm obviously a huge fan of the AWD but just be aware that you may have to replace three big ticket items at once!

There's no way to check the viscous coupler? The rear CV axles look okay and I don't remember seeing anything leaking or seeping at the rear diff. I was getting ready to do struts all around but now I'm not sure. I don't want to spend another dime if I'm not going ahead with the transfer case/ driveshaft.Big Will wrote:The only problem here is that you can't really verify that the viscous coupling is functioning properly without having the driveshaft and a properly working angle gear installed.

I'd take a FWD car + SNOW tires any day over an AWD with 4-season tires.
I'd invest the money into a set of snow tires.
The AWD feature creates:
- additional cost of maintenance
- additional gasoline cost of about $400 per year based on a 10K miles/year calculation.

I would take an awd car with snow tires over a fwd car without snow tires lol.. There are plenty of options out there.
That's crazy that the transfer case is just gone. I guess you learned that lesson.. You've gotta look under the car before you buy it lol
On this specific car I really wouldn't even bother trying to fix it who knows what else is broken at this point. Just drive it or sell it if you really want awd. It might not be worth the money invested in trying to get it up and running correctly.
