Very noisy 240dl wagon

my 89 240 wagon makes a racket when you accelerate. It is especially pronounced when going up a hill- it's embarrassing I must wake up all the neighbors. Its hard to pinpoint the problem because it doesnt make the noise when I have the rear wheels off the ground. It is getting louder by the day. Please help. What can I check? I dont want to take it to a shop-- I'm cheap and poor. PS it sounds like you dropped a tray load of knives and forks on the ground. Thanks Phil

This is hard to say-
1- be sure the fluids in the trannie and rear-end are topped up.
2-When you coast while driving, in neutral, does it continue to make the noise?- trannie issues
3-If you raise one wheel and drive-in-place does it continue the noise?
4-Does it make the noise while in neutral stopped?
5- You can't determine the general direction of the noise while parked?
