1998 S70 T5 - I've got an oil leak, can someone help identif

Post by TrstnBrtt »

Hey fellow Volvo owners, my 98 T5 has suffered from many oil leaks since I bought it, and being that I bought it as a beater to get me through school I've never really chased them down, just kept an eye on it, however I've actually started chasing them down and I didn't realize that some of them were quite easy to fix. Now I'm down to the last one, and it's on the bottom of the engine. Any ideas where it's coming from? I'm thinking oil return line. Sorry for the terrible pictures. I wasn't going to jack up the car just to take a picture of the leak, and yes it's been leaking for a LONG time.

If I paid attention to signs with little symbols I’d never find anywhere to park.

First determine if it's dripping down from above. You can spray degreaser around that end of the engine and wipe it down. If you're sure it's coming from the bottom area, is the oil pan seal tight? Again, cleaning oil from that area, including the underside of the transmission will help to pinpoint it. If it's coming out the bottom of the bell housing that usually points to the rear main seal. If so, you have pull the transmission to replace that seal.

My guess is rear main seal. Sorry

Have you serviced the PCV system yet?

I did the PCV last October, I've had the same leak since before I did it. It's quite a small leak (that's admittedly going everywhere). Would a RMS leak stay that small for that long?

Main seal, maybe gearbox drive shaft seals? Also check Turbo.
Here was mine.

I had an RMS leak and still have a turbo return line leak. I THINK the RMS leak is cured, I haven't wiped down the old oil yet and the oil is now dripping from the turbo area.

I went to Walmart and got an 8 oz bottle of seal conditioner and poured it into the engine. After 3 tank fulls of gas, the leak appears to be stopped. Hurray if it is cured!

The turbo oil return leak usually comes down the rear side of the sump and sprays over everything from there back.

Quick question: can I get to and loosen the 5mm allen screws with an old allen wrench, you know, the kind that looks like an "L"? I also have yet to put the car up on jack stands to check things out on my 1995 855T, besides the oil is a real mess back there.

Thanks
Klaus
If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.
