2000 V70R - AWD Rear diff oil change?

Post by scot850 »

I am about to re-fill the rear diff with good old Volvo rear diff oil. I haven't done this in a long time and can't find the method for doing so. Do you just fill the diff until fluid runs out and then stick the plug back in?

With the muffler and VC unit out of the way just now there is lots more (relatively) room to do this. Only issue is the car is not on the flat. I will top off when I have the car on axle stands all around for the brake bleeding.

Any advice is appreciated.

I suggest driving around a bit before trying to get the old diff fluid out. If the diff is warm, you will be able to siphon it out with a 1/4" clear plastic tube. Measure what you get out and put same amount back in. Usually about 3/4 quart. Use synthetic gear oil only.

Even if you only manage to get half of the fluid out, the new fluid will be welcomed by the gears.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

Thanks guys. I'll read up on your write up cn90. Klausc, I have had the rear end completely out of the car and new seals fitted, so there is no oil in there at the moment. But your point on warm versus cold is good.

If it's empty then it's just a matter of filling it with oil until it comes out of the hole. On mine I changed it and plan on changing it again here in another 1000 miles since i'm sure it started to loosen up the junk inside.

Thanks JC. The oil had supposedly been changed in the last 50,000km or less according to last owner. Trouble I had was the car is at an angle as the back end is in the air for the sub-frame re-build. What I did was to raise the nose of the diff to what looked like horizontal and filled using what looks like a large syringe with a narrow 5" hose on the end until fluid came out. I'll re-check the level when I get the car more level when bleeding the brakes with all wheels off the ground.

Our P80 diffs are supposed to hold 1.3L as a guide at least.

Thanks Will. That is weird as I filled about 0.9l and it started to come out the filler. I was surprised as I thought they only help 0.8l? Having said that, I don't have any info that I can find to substantiate that.

I'll definitely have to re-check this once the car is more level. I'm sure I only bought 1 liter of oil as Vida stated 0.8 liters. I'll check in a sec once my laptop has fired up. Well, just checked and it says 1 liter required. That is why I bought the amount I did. Wouldn't surprise me if Volvo made the quantity 1.1 liter just to sell more oil!

Thanks, but I will still check this!
