96 850T wagon . Anyone dealt with tailpipe melting bumper ?
I'm looking for some causes and solutions. I thought it was ok for the tailpipe to touch the plastic of the bumper but maybe this is incorrect. I thought I'd seen a lot of pictures with the 2 parts touching and no melting occuring. Does the type of tailpipe tip used make a difference I know there are some that have added an outer layer to the inside pipe and others like the ones Volvo seems to sell now which are just an expanded single layer pipe?

I have seen and heard of several people with an exhaust tip that touched that didn't cause a problem for them. The way you responded made it sound like I asked an ignorant question. Maybe it would be better if you didn't respond at all. And by the way I've spent days of back breaking work "fixing my exhaust system" . Sorry if I tried to make things a little bit easier for myself by asking a question which the answer to might save me some work.

i would check the rubber donuts and the attach points. Looking at the 98 and 2000 V70 it appears there is about 3/8 to 1/2 inch clearance from the bumber. The other possibility is your bumber may be sagging a little due to the mounts being rusted.

I'm sorry if you felt offended, but most of us are
genuinely trying to help fellow Volvo folks here.
You asked, I answered - Take it any way you wish.
My point is that heat and plastic don't mix. Look at
any car in it's "new" state, and there's space between
the tip and the bumper. If the tip is up against plastic,
something is wrong with the way it's assembled and hanging.
You didn't say anything about already trying to fix it,
so my suggestion seemed pretty straight ahead to me.
Good Luck.

The previous owner of my 850 had a bike rack installed (wrongly), and a bike tire melted, exploded and sprayed bubbling rubber onto the bumper, which promptly also melted.
The exhaust can get really hot, and will definitely melt any plastic part it's touching. Like kahl said, see if you can't adjust the hangers to set the system correctly.
