Refinishing an old dresser from the trash

Post by SonicAdventure »

I used my Volvo the other day to scoop up this weird looking dresser from the trash man...

I removed the top, which is a 5 piece poplar frame topped with a formica laminate. I painted the rest of the dresser black, and cleaned up the handles. I plan to use it for my TV and CDs / DVD's etc.

I really want to remove the formica layer and put some 1/4" ply wood or something similar on the frame and stain it. I don't think painting formica is a recipe for success, esp on something that is going to get used a lot.

I tried putting a hot iron on the formica with a washcloth between the formica and the iron trying to losen the glue. No luck. The formica got so hot I couldn't even touch it but the glue didn't seem to give at all.

Any suggestions as to how I might be able to loosen this glue up or other ideas? The glue looks like some kind of white epoxy, but I might be wrong. thanks.
