Hey guys, first time posting here about my 91' 240 sedan (5 speed manual). It all started when i went to go start my car, and it wouldnt fire up. (car would crank but not turn over) Luckily i bought a new fuel pump relay, swapped it out, and continued on with my day. A week later i was in a parking lot and the same thing happened again. So i unplugged the relay and plugged it back in and no luck. (i could not hear the pump turn on) I wound up getting the car towed and having the main fuel pump replaced(with an aftermarket pump, dont remember which one) and it ran fine until after a while i noticed a loud wincing noise coming from the pump. The next day i was stuck again with a no start condition, and the fuel pump was not turning on. After three days of trying, it finally started, i drove it back to the shop and had them put an OEM pump in, and the car started again. Once i drove it home to change and leave for work, again, no start. Now i began to freak out, did more research and found out that the secondary pump in the tank may cause the relay to trip if it is not working properly. Now that i have no more money to give to a mechanic, i ordered the parts to change the secondary pump myself. Yesterday the car managed to start up and bring me to school and back, and then wouldnt start a few hours later only this time the relay clicks twice, but the main fuel pump isnt turning on. If i change the secondary fuel pump will it do anything if the main pump isnt even turning on anymore? Im starting to get really fed up, i love this car but im being pressured into getting a car payment which i really dont need right now, and i just want my baby to work. If you guys can PLEASE help me!! I also read that if you tap the control arm sensor you can get the car to start but i cant seem to locate it.
Sincerely,
A broke, desperate, 17 year old 240 lover.
Losing faith in my 91' 240

Just tried to jump the fuel pump with the paperclip and it turned on. I started the car, and it died after a few seconds. Any thoughts?

Does this car have the lit antenna ring where you put the key in? Sounds more like the cause of the whole problem and nothing to do with fuel possibly.

Not too sure what you mean by "lit antenna ring". Thanks for the reply.stinger04038 wrote:Does this car have the lit antenna ring where you put the key in? Sounds more like the cause of the whole problem and nothing to do with fuel possibly.

Key switches are known to fail...just like the ignition module (power stage) that works in-conjunction with your coil.
I'd find another power stage, and install it...up by battery area, if I recall.
But, your posts suggests an electrical problem...which means you have to perform test-light experiments.

I can order the power stage and give that a try, but could you tell me a bit more about this test light experiment stuff? Im very new to all this and not too good at it!93Regina wrote:>"lit antenna ring"

Coil Test for Voltage - I just grabbed this diagram off of the internet, but with a test light, ground one end to vehicle's battery, and have someone hold other end on the Blue wire at coil. Turn ignition to on position, does test light turn on? If so, start vehicle with person holding test light there...if vehicle dies, is the test light still on?egcarney48 wrote:test light experiment
There are a series of tests to perform, this is only one of them.
Another experiment is to leave that fuel pump jumper wire hooked up, then use test light and see if it is always lit.
