Power seat differences 70/850

Post by skloon »

I have swapped s60 seats into my 850 drivers side is fine but passenger was a manual- I had a base for an s70 but the connectors are different from the 850 controller box that mounts on the frame- can I use the s70 one with the 850 ?

I think that seat airbags from v70 are not compatible with 850 srs ecu.

I don't know how did you connect seats from s60 either.

Even almost all Volvo seats across the models are physicaly bolt to bolt....sips systems are different and seat airbags will not work.

If the 850 seat was a manual, then the only connections would have been for the heated seat, and I don't think their was any air-bags then. Not sure if there are connections for the SIPS. If you are trying to install a power seat from a later car then that is more difficult as I don't know if Volvo installed the wires in all cars to allow manufacturing to do either in production. Hopefully someone here can answer that. There was a similar thread recently on swapping seats.

The way to deal with a power seat going into a car that had manual seats is to just get power to them. There is also a diagnostic line but the main thing is power to the brain box that goes under the seat. I think most of the cars were pre-wired for power seats even if they weren't there originally but going between series I don't think the connectors are the same so you have to do a cut and splice job. I don't have any docs on a a S-60 but you can grab them from here:

http://www.volvowiringdiagrams.com/

If you grab a set for the 850, the 70 series, and the 60 series you should be able to correlate the wire colors that need to splice together. Since the 60 series seats have SIPS and you don't have an electronic trigger for them I would just twist those wires together and tape them off to prevent an accidental triggering.

Ideally you will have the control box and control panel that is native to the seat frame that is used which makes it just a matter of getting power to the control box. If you do need to use an 850 control box with a 70 series or 60 series frame you will need to identify the wire colors for the motors and splice them together correctly. The motors themselves are all pretty much the same as far as I know.

Up to '95 sips system was without side air bags.
'96 and later have sips bags.

I swapped seats from a '99 V70XC into my '97 850 GLT. Passenger and drivers side have heat and are electric, but I do not have functioning SIPS. I swapped the '99 seats on the the base/frame of the 850. With the attached picture of the '99 wiring received from moderator "abscate" I was able to get all electronic functions working - electrics including memory and the heat.

I'm here to tell you that Volvo did not install the power seat harness on the passenger side in all cars. My base model 1998 V70, for example, has no power seat wiring on the passenger side, so it isn't a given that the car will be wired for a passenger side power seat is it didn't originally come with one.
