2005 V70 Transmission "Bump"

Post by goldmandan »

97 k mile V70. Runs fine when cold once it warms up it has a small shift flare 1-2 and then when you slow down it clunks from 2-1 only sometimes....... with 97k is it time for trans fluid drain and fill? I am planning to use seafoam transtune and then run it for 50-100 miles and drain and fill again. Using Castrol transmission oil for Toyota (Type IV) and good for all Volvos.

Let me know if anyone else has had this go away with a trans fluid change...........

I have a 2004 V70 and I did the transmission fluid change using Mobil 3309. I did have some hard shifting but after the change it seems to have smoothed itself out. Hope that helps.

I drained about 3 quarts and replaced it with 1 pint sea foam trans tune and the rest castrol import trans fluid that said good for all Volvos and equal to Toyota iiV which I have used in the past drove it for 20 miles and dumped it out again. Fluid came out pretty dark still then filled with 3 ata of the castrol and now it shifts a lot nicer but still has a hard 2-1 if I stop hard. Wonder if it will smooth out over time? I reset the oil change minder for the trans but did not do any adaptations since no repairs were done to the tranny

It is good to first inspect the engine/transmission mounts.

As for the transmission itself, lack of fluid change causes the solenoids to get stuck.

I also replaced my engine/transmission torque rod since the rubber was all chewed up. I'm sure that along with the fluid change helped. The torque rod was also very easy to replace.

Thanks guys
I checked fluid level while in park after running it a few seconds in each heat first and found level to be low. I added about a qt of castrol fluid that said compatible with all volvo automatics
The shifting was almost perfect again after the level was up to par but after engine warmed up and trans fluid it would still shift hard down from 2-1. Is the castrol fluid ok? I did not check torque mount under the car when under load but it looked OK but sometimes it is not noticeable until you remove it. Any thoughts

Having a similar issue on my XC. Random clunks on coasting downshifs, delayed 1-2 2-3 upshift, and harsh garage shifts once hot. I'm quite confident that it is the linear solenoids causing issues, but for my time I'm installing a refurbished valve body from Valve Body Builders. Would DIY but I very minimal time to dedicate to my car recently, especially dedicating the 5-7h takes to swap a VB then perform adaption. Was going to have this done next week, but I think I'll hold off until the new year. I'm not that active on this forum, but I'll try to update here if it solves me issue.

Good Luck.
