I had a request for photos if possible for the position of the roll over valve at the rear of the P80 AWD. 98 have a different layout for the fuel filter so not sure how relevant this is for that year and 97 850 AWD. I know the 98 V/S 70 AWD and V70XC are a pain to access the fuel filter relative to the 99/00 years.
Anyway, as the requester didn't give me the year I will post what pictures I have in the hope they may have some help to replacing the valve.
There is a couple of ways you can tackle this.
Can't remember which model you have, but, if it is a 99/00 AWD then I would suggest the following:
1) Tackle from below. Remove fuel filter and the roll over valve is in from of this to the right side of the carbon can.
The roll over valve is the part in the center of the picture above with the oetiker clamp at the front of it.
2) Remove the oetiker clamp from the end of the pipe that goes from the carbon can to the roll over valve at the valve end. Remove the pipe from the valve.
3) You may have to remove the cover plate from the trunk area on the RH side where all the wires run under the floor to the fuel pump, etc. You need to remove the forward floor cover plate to access this. Raise the cover and remove the 4 x 10mm bolts holding the cover (2 each side) and slide the cover towards the back of the car and lift out. This will give you a better view of where you are working, but I'd suggest not removing it if you don't have to. The cover plate and it's gasket are no longer available, although if you are careful you should be able to re-use what you have.
The roll over valve is directly below the hatch.
4) The roll over valve is held in place at the side of the carbon canister on a 'hook'. You need to slide it up-wards about 1-1 1/2" to lift it clear. There is a snap connector for the wire on the back of it to disconnect and a 2nd pipe on the RH side that vents up to the fuel filler filter. This has to be removed and you are then good.
Good luck,
Neil.

Just to add to the record, in case FWD people end up in this post, too: the rollover valve on a 98 FWD is a pretty different device. It is totally mechanical, no wiring to it at all, and relatively easy to access near the fuel filter.

or, mounted in place:

The FWD P80 cars all (well up to 98 anyway) all have this same, mechanical valve.

kahl please check my post, it had typos that made it pretty wrong and that would affect your upcoming job (I said AWD where I meant FWD). I have fixed it now.

On my 98 AWD mine looks like the pictures that erik posted. The fuel filter and rollover placement is the same. You would need to remove the front and rear access ports to get them changed.

And be sure the hoses are in good shape and secured so you don't end up with vacuum leaks, evap codes and crappy gas mileage for months (like me!)

Maybe it's the newer AWDs? Year-to-year changes?jcdillin wrote:On my 98 AWD mine looks like the pictures that erik posted. The fuel filter and rollover placement is the same. You would need to remove the front and rear access ports to get them changed.

I believe the 98 has the fuel filter with the inlet/outlet pipes facing front to back on rack mounting, and to access the front side you have to lift the floor to access and remove the fuel pipe to the front. The 99/00 has the same fuel filter but mounted across the car as shown in my pictures. This is easier to access (relatively!). The roll-over valves are definitely different on the earlier AWD.
Glad to be corrected on this if I'm wrong!
Neil.
