89 240, water coming in from the floor

Post by johnnysaltshaker »

My 89 240 sedan has rain water coming in. After several weeks of pouring rain I noticed my carpets were SOPPING wet. I peeled back the carpet and found leaves collected in the driver side footwell under the foam. I'm assuming that means there's a pretty big leak somewhere and I'm fairly certain its rocker drain/cowl vent related. I haven't been able to locate all of the rocker drain plugs. I cleaned leaves out of three drains in the front drivers side footwell, but I found none in the rear. I was under the impression there should be more than just three drain plugs. Anybody know where they are on my car?

Also, I'm wondering if it's ok just to completely block the cowl vents so no water gets in.

ALso I don't have a sunroof and I don't think its the windshield. There's no water by the firewall.

I dried out my carpet with a shop vac and hairdryer but water is still getting in.

Location, location, location...maybe move to Sedona, Arizona?

How about your heater core shooting craps? How does it smell? Loosing any anti-freeze?

How about the "grommet on the bonnet release cable?" Intact?

coolant levels haven't dropped at all. grommet on the bonnet looks good. forgot to mention that the water is only on the drivers side, in the front and the rear footwells. The trunk also has a ton of condensation.

edit: Also, pouring hose water down the cowl vents results in standing water in the footwells. 2+2? need to find where the leak is.

Disclaimer: I Know Very Little about Cars. 1 year of volvo ownership has taught me a LOT, but I'm still learning. So speak slowly and enunciate please.

I double checked the hood release cable with a flashlight and.....

FOUND IT! The place in the engine compartment where the hood release cable comes out was flooded with water. There was a piece of yellow plastic debris in the drain right next to it. Water was pooling and submerging the hood release cable, which leaked into the cabin. Now i need to seal it! I don't know how to do anything, help! Whats the quickest easiest dumbass proof way to fix this besides taking it to someone who knows how? Can I stick some sealant in there and call it good? I've got some DAP foam sealant spray, good idea? need input. Super happy just to finally have an answer that isn't "your floor is rusted out".

I suppose one cleans affected area up, and apply 100% Silicone.

Make sure the drains at the bottom of the rockers are clear.
There are 3-4 on each side where the sheet metal join forms an opening.
A little tube brush works.
Best to clean out inside of rocker- there are plugs inside which you can access by peeling back the carpet
