Hi,
I picked up a 2001 140 v70 today for a bargain price its in mint condition but its got a problem as i have never owned a volvo before im unsure what it is
When its warmed up it has a rough idle and hunts between 500 - 1000 i knew this when i bought it but took the risk ,
I drove it home 45miles no problems at all pulled well there was a error message of something like engine service
Got home nipped out in it all fine apart from the idling but on the way home had a big loss of power on idle revs were rising to 3000 with foot off throttle
then revs stayed steady at 1000 but felt like engine was pulsating sorta throbbing
i also got 2 more messages on lcd one saying emissions service other said urgent service
after i been home couple hours i thought id try it it again apart from the original rough idling it drove fine up and down the road
anyone give me somewhere to start?
thanks

Step 1 would be to check for codes. Check for vacuum leaks including manifold, ETM gasket and all air induction hoses. You could try unplugging the MAF and see if things settle down. Ignition problems would probably not come and go like your issue does. That said, check coil packs and plugs anyway. The 01 has an ETM that is notorious for failure, hopefully this isn't you problem but...

Refurbished ones or Xmodex replacement ETM about 500 USD plus another 100 for programming. Not as bad as it used to be.

Check that fuse for ETM is not blown. If it is blown the ETM likely has an armature that's shorting. Fuse is under the hood.

Get a OBD-II code reader. You can find them online for less than $40 (I have the simple Actron and it works well), and it will save you a thousand dollars in just a few years. Read the codes. It sounds like a misfire on one of the cylinders, which is often the ignition coil. You can read the code, find the cylinder on which the misfire is occurring, then swap that ignition coil to another cylinder, and see if the misfire code moves to that cylinder. If so, replace the ignition coil pack ($90 from volvo dealers, less online).
