Burned Valve Database DATA ONLY or a P0455 code will be set

Post by mecheng »

Firstly, burned valves are not that common. Many Volvo white block engines will go to 500,000km and beyond with no issues. Look no further than many of our fellow members. So don't let this deter you from making a purchase. Until a root cause is determined, use premium fuel.

Hopefully, our moderators can sticky this and we can get some good data input.

For all members who've experienced this failure mode, can you please provide the following:

a) Year
b) Model
c) Mileage Total
d) Mileage under your ownership
e) Octane Gas you typically use
f) Supplier of Gas
g) Driving Cycle (% city/ % hwy)
h) Driving Behaviour (average, passive, aggressive)
i) Typical Load in Vehicle: single occupant, or multiple occupant
j) Location and Typical driving weather
k) Does the car have leaky valve guides (ie: blue smoke at start up)
l) What kind of oil do you use
m) Describe in detail how it happened: (ie: ambient temperature, throttle input, load, etc.)
n) How many valves burned and which Cylinder
o)What brand coolant do you use, when was it last changed.
p) What did you do with engine/car

yes, leaky valve stem seals
dino (non-synthetic) oil
driving on flat highway at steady speed and the car hiccuped, speed was probably 65 mph

@erik11 as the inagural poster, if I could I'd give you a donut we brought into work today.
Interesting info, as the non turbo cars use different exhaust valves (non sodium filled I believe) and they are not immune.

I added one more question: Coolant brand, as there is a theory that non Volvo coolant can cause hot spots.

Theory about Non Volvo coolant is ridiculous. There is No special coolant made particularly for Volvos.Coolant is coolant.
The only different type of coolant is g12.It have prolonged service interval than regular(blue or greeny)coolant.

How about save the opinions, debates and interpretations for another thread, let's just collect data here?

You beat me to it. Besides, let this thread prove the coolant theory right or wrong. There is already coolant thread about HOAT and such.

Hopefully our great moderators can sticky this to gain traction. :D

a) '98
b) V70 base, 5 speed manual trans.
c) 229,500 when valve burned
d) I bought with either 72K miles or 77 k miles on it, can't recall so figure about 150K
e) 87
f) Non major supplier
g) 80% stop and go, 20% highway
h) passive hypermiling
i) primarily single occupant but occasional double occupant
j) N.J. year round
k)No leaky valve stem seals
l) Mobil 1 10 W 30 year round -- 7,500 to 10,000 mile oil change interval
m) On highway at c. 85 mph in fourth (didn't realize I was in fourth for about five min). Spring day negotiating a moderate climb
n) 1 exhaust valve on cylinder #3
o) Don't pay too much attention to coolant brand -- G5 probably, but could have been almost anything. Don't have specific change interval
p) Scrapped engine -- replaced with used unit after my head rebuild/replacement project didn't work out so well. Car now has c. 301K miles and is in shop right now for replacement of failed internal clutch slave cylinder.

q) Believe front O2 sensor had failed gradually over time without throwing a CEL (average fuel mileage was going up and I thought it was a result of my awesome driving skills). It was not replaced as a maintenance item at 100K miles as it should have been and I lost track of actual mileage on the part. Guessing that failure mode was continual leaning out of mixture. That coupled with 87 octane wasn't helping things since a lean engine runs hot and an engine running on regular runs hotter.
