Hi all
I'm researching my biggest DIY attempt yet, and I've seen and read a lot of PCV system tutorials. Now maybe this engine isn't SO different than a lot of other years/models. But remember this is a Turbo and the ETM in bolted to the underside of the intake manifold. I feel like SOMEWHERE someone said that on some model years (99/00?) you DON'T have to remove the intake manifold to get access to the PCV system pipes, trap and the block?
I may have misread or imagined this, but has anyone done their PCV on this car without removing the manifold? Can you do it with the manifold in place? From under the car maybe?
FOLLOW UP: If I do have to remove the manifold - can I just remove the air induction hose from the ETM and disconnect the electrical connection then remove the manifold with the ETM still attached? I just put in this new ETM and I'd rather not pull it right back out...but I will if that is what is suggested.

I would remove the throttle body then remove the intake manifold. I have done six of these jobs and have yet not found away around the intake manifold. I also remove the fan shroud to give me more room to get at those blind nuts and bolts. The steps in the how to do threads I've found work quite well.

Even with the engine outside the car, I still do the PCV system with the intake manifold off.

In theory it's doable. In practice it isn't.
If you have done a bunch of these and knew where all the fasteners are and how they present, and exactly which tools to use ( down to the length of the socket extenders on the 1/4 inch drive you use to release the IM) you might be able to do this.
Taking off the IM will be 1/4 of the time, though.

Yesterday, I replaced the PCV system on my 99 XC without removing the intake. I removed the throttle body/ETM and the pipe between it and the intercooler. Then I removed the radiator (replacing it) and ETM, and went from there. The most difficult part was removing the 17 mm banjo bolt for the PCV coolant line, which attaches to the under/passenger side of the intake RIGHT near the alternator.
I don't see the intake manifold as being difficult to remove and have done the PCV job "normally" before, but figured this time I'd just try leaving it alone. I prefer removing the intake anyway to make it easier to clean out the oil ports on the block, but mostly because it allows for a more thorough job.

You're definitely going to want to remove the intake manifold (make sure you have a new intake mani gasket handy). Who am I to say it's impossible to do the fix without removing, but you're going to want to.
There are 3 hoses I can think of that would be nearly impossible to replace/re-route without at least partially removing the intake manifold. But if you partially remove it, you're going to need to replace the manifold gasket, which require pulling it entirely anyways.
I've done the PCV twice, and if you're nervous about it being too difficult, know that trying to do it with the intake manifold on, will make everything exponentially more difficult.

There is one long pipe that leaves the trap and wraps around the engine. Has anyone with this car tried to follow the suggestion for how to use a piece from an XC90 (the banjo piece part number 30731007) and adapt it to the old/existing PCV system (cleaned)?instead of replacing it with the expensive pipe 9470330?

The images another member posted are no longer available and since I'm a novice DIY mechanic who has never looked at one of these pipes I'm not sure what I'd be facing. Maybe someone has another image of the splice/mated pipe (I asked "JRL" and he doesn't) I'm also wondering what method to use to join it? Clamp? Weld? Other...?

Just a warning: the 5/8 hose is so popular on here that you will get tons of encouragement to just install it, from people who have no idea of the PCV differences between a 98 and 99. So take it with a grain of salty; good thing you are well aware of the differences already. Someone did hack the 99 pipe like a week ago, had a bunch of problems with popping the dipstick (not really sure of those were related, did not follow the thread), search for that thread.

Remove the pipe carefully, clean it and replace it. There is a somewhat delicate part of the vacuum system connecting to the banjo bolt you want to be careful with.
The 1999-on PVC system can't be hacked with just a heater pipe as the PCV is heated with coolant flow. Thats one of the reasons it doesn't clog as much.
