Engine Stalls Out in Hot Weather

Post by JimWWhite »

Recently I've had a problem with my '94 850 N.A. with an intermittent stall. A couple of days ago it stalled out when I was driving along and coasting down a hill. The engine just shut off. I pulled over onto a side street and after a two or three minutes it started back up and ran great all the way home. When I was trying to get it started it would fire and appear to be start but when the RPM's came back down to idle of 900 or so it would run rough for a few seconds and then stall out again. If I tried to get on the throttle it would stall out immediately. But after just a few minutes and a few more tries it started and I was on my way again and I drove nearly sixty miles back home. It feels like a fuel problem, kinda like an old car I once had that had a vapor lock.

Then yesterday I was having the car washed. It had been turned off for about fifteen minutes during this time. When I got in and started it up again the same thing happened. After six or seven tries and two or three minutes it fired up and ran great. I drove over to a service station and went inside for a drink and when I came out it happened again. I took it to my local mechanic and they drove it all over town to pick up parts, etc. during the afternoon and they couldn't get it to repeat. There were no codes in the diagnostic block. They suggested I take it to the Volvo dealer.

The funny thing is that this seems to be happening because of the hot weather. Last September this happened to me twice. But all fall, winter, and spring no problem. Lately we've been getting 90+ temperatures and it's happening again. Not in the morning or when it's cool, but only in the heat of the afternoon.

Any thoughts before I have to go grovel in front of my local Volvo Service Tech and pay out the nose?

Do you have a chip in your key? I have a 2000 V70 and had a similar problem. They had to replace the antenna or something like that - that reads the chip. It would seem to want to start but would not played with the key and soon it would start. I don't know about weather temps I only waited 3 days to get it fixed drove me crazy. Mine was under warranty. Good Luck

What is an 'FPR'? O2 sensor I know but I'm not familiar with the 'FPR'...

Do fuel-pressure test.

In hot weather, the fuel pump tends to become weak -- causing low fuel pressure. Also, possible problem with Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR).
