'98 S70~ Emission Woes

Post by TrishP »

Greetings:

Seeking the sage advice of this forums members once again!
A few months back you all gave me great advice when my radiator needed replacement.

I'll try to be succinct, but offering some background in case it's relevant.....

Last year I failed emissions and the tech suggested trying a new gas cap. Got one at Autozone and also convinced the clerk to turn off the check engine light/code. Returned to emissions the next day for a retest and passed. My check engine light came on again about 2 weeks later....and stayed on....until----->Fast forward to my radiator problem....after my mechanic replaced it, the check engine light went off. Same thing happened--it came back on about 2 weeks later....and stayed on.

Went for my emission test this year and failed again. The Diagnostic Trouble Code is P0410 Secondary Air Injection System. They gave me a list of Certified Emissions Repair Facilities ;-( Not wanting to pay for a large repair cost! Have a week left to attend to this matter. Any ideas/suggestions appreciated!!

P0410 is a nuisance code, and a super common one. 95.8 % chance the SAS check valve has failed, and the air pump is full of water and not working.

The SAS system is expensive to fix even via DIY methods. But you can trick the car into thinking the system is in place by installing a $2 diode. http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/14 ... with-pics/ . The emissions tech would not be keen on this method, of course. If you feel guilty about deleting an emissions device, keep in mind that a lot of 98 S70 T5s shipped without SAS and with nothing in its place, you just got unlucky and bought one that came with SAS.

If you get the light turned off down at Autozone, then probably it will stay off for two weeks, is that an option again this year?

You could also swap in an ECU from a 98 S70 T5 that did not have SAS, if you can find one. We should have a loaner ECU for those purposes, hmmm ...

Thanks ErikV11!
Am going to see if someone can turn off the code and give me a reprieve for another year ;-)

All 98 M4.4 ECU can be flash to whatever calibration you want.

Its a trick dance of timing - you have to turn off the code, drive enough for the Monitors to 'go ready' about 100-200 miles, then inspect, but not before the SAS gets sensed faulty and trip the code again.

I believe CT follows the EPA Federal protocol and allows you to have 2 monitors NOT READY on your 1998. NY does this, which is how my 1999 passed for the last 4 years...my EVAP monitor takes over 2000 miles to set.

Exactly. That's why we only need one loner ECU.

In my 95 R I use a 4.4 flashed with appropriate AC and injector modifications, a few other things. I no longer use the diode on a car that can use 4.4.
