1995 855T No start, no fuel

Post by Klausc »

I have a quick question re: 1995 855T. It refuses to start, nice crank and no fuel pressure. I pulled the fuse, OK. I pulled the relay and jumped with a paper clip, no pump noise. So I am assuming the pump gave its last gasp.

The question is about the relay. With the paper clip in place, I got 12V at the pump wire. With the relay in place, nothing?? Granted, it does take a few seconds to get from the passenger seat to the back of the car and plug in the voltmeter, but zero voltage at the pump? Did the relay go south at the same time?

Anyone try a fuel pump like this one, for $20????:

I think the relay will allow power to go to the fuel pump for just 2-3 seconds unless it is getting a signal that the engine is running. You could test this out by leaving the meter connected to the pump and placing the meter display somewhere where you can keep an eye on it while turning the ignition switch.
I haven't tried out that pump... The fuel pump on my '97 855 GLT died a couple weeks ago at ~184k miles and I put in a new Volvo OEM pump... I couldn't believe how quiet the new pump is compared to the old one. The old one used to buzz noticeably even over the sound of the engine running. In retrospect I probably should have taken that noise as a sign that the old pump was nearing the end of its life.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

This is the first time any of my Volvo's have left me stranded. Fortunately it was only 2 miles from home. I broke down and ordered a Bosch pump motor for a lot of money. Something called 'trust' made me do it! I will also order a backup FP relay and a new fuel filter, in case the old filter is mostly clogged and causing the pump to work harder than it should.

I expect to be on the road again Monday evening. This gives me a chance to clean all of the dirt off the top of the fuel pump and tank - what a mess!
