1998 s70 t5m new lifters, still noisy

Hey guys. I was having problems with noisy lifters in my s70. About three months ago, i had a tick that would go away after a few minutes of operation. It developed into a tick that persisted, then got louder. I took it in to my local Indy for an oil pan o-ring job. Tick persisted, then got louder still. Took it back to the same shop to bite the bullet for a head job. Replaced 20 lifters, removed head, new stem seals and whatnot to the tune of $2k. Ouch. Got my car back today, and while the ticking is quieter, it's still there. The mechanic wants me to drive it normally over the weekend, he states the lifters should pump up and quiet down over the next couple days. He said he'll call on Monday for an update. I'm a little cheesed that my car makes any noise at all after such a hefty bill, but do you think the lifters need to break in? What gives?

The lifters definitely take a little while to pump up and quiet down after the head is off, no doubt about that. But usually within 30 miles or so you are there.

I'm really surprised if the lifters actually needed replacing, but don't know a good explanation, either. Just that I have never heard of them needing replacement on one of these cars. Did he use OEM Volvo parts on the o ring job? And he's good, knows Volvos? I really hope he used OEM valve stem seals, that is crucial. Have heard about several premature failures with aftermarket ones.

Greetings. What oil weight are you using ? Did you ever try a heavier weight before having work done ? An oil change with a heavier oil would be a cheap way to check for ticking loudness difference. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, he's a Volvo and saab shop. He does good work. All oem parts. He showed me the old lifters, but I couldn't distinguish a collapsed one. It does seem quieter after my drive to work, so we'll see I guess. I usually run rotella dino 5-40, but when I had the rings done the mechanic switched to 10-30 full synthetic.

This has probably slid pretty far down the topics by now, the noise persists. The mechanic mentioned possibly the oil pump gasket sucking air, and I know i have leaky oil cooler hoses. Would either of these contribute to my problems? Thanks in advance,

Leaky oil cooler hoses? Yikes. Engines like oil pressure and good oil pressure at that. Lets get those fixed, pronto.

Oil pressure is good i guess, haven't measured it but my dash light goes right out. Maybe my pressure is enough to satisfy the light, but not the top of the motor. Sounds Volvo-ey, like the temp gauge that isn't very accurate. I took a video. How do I upload it into my post? Sorry for the stupid question. I'm planning on cooler hoses asap. Thanks guys.
