Post by mccdylon »

hey,

i was wondering if anyone in here that has had or owned a v70 98-00 has had a power issue or almost a lack of torque? thats the only way i can describe it when i step on the gas. after I'm up to speed she is fine but the initial 0-15 is laggy. any info would help, maybe thats just the way they handle? not sure thanks!

Start with the simple stuff:

When was the ignition system serviced last? I.e. Distributor cap, rotor, wires, plugs? What brands did you use? Recommendations are: Bosch, Bosch, Bougicord, Volvo set to 0.028" (for turbos in particular). These cars are particular to what you use on them.

Turbo system: Have you checked the intake pipework and intercooler for leaks? That is from air-box to turbo to intercooler to throttle body.
Also check the vacuum/pressure system that supports the turbo operation. mainly the pipework for leaks and the operation of: TCV which fail with age, the compressor valve/diaphragm splits with age. Any leaks or failure of these parts will prevent boost/torque at low revs.

That is a good start.

My V70 used to be pretty poopy in the 0-30 range. I replaced all vacuum lines in and around the turbo, got a TCV ($5 from local pick n pull), replaced very old plugs and wires, and the difference was immediate and astounding. My wife and I switched cars one day, and she texts me not 10 min after leaving "Why is the car a bunch faster?!"

I didn't do all that at the same time, but I can tell you that replacing all the vacuum lines and getting a functioning TCV is what made like 90% of the difference in performance. Before the maintenance, using the "Sport" mode would result in no obvious performance difference, and now I can squeal the tires from a dead stop (not a big squeal, just a moderate squeal).

Planning on getting a new dist. cap/rotor, and new injectors this summer.

Just a +1 to both posts, these are good suggestions.

FYI, Sport mode just changes the shift point, no more no less. The trans changes gears at higher RPMs when in Sport mode.

I had a 98 V70XC and liked the way the 13G turbo worked. It gives more torque at low rpm's. Shocked a lot of people at the lights. It was quicker of the mark than my 'R' with 2/3rds the power. TCV and it's associated pipework is a good place to start. It the rubber pipes are crumbly replace with silicon tubing. But like I said earlier, if the weather is up to it, give the whole system and pipework a good look over and check it carefully!

Oh wow, I had no idea. Crazy how big a difference it makes.
