Will stock studs for stock steel wheel work on stock mag wheel?

Post by harojs »

I changed from stock 15in steel wheels to stock 15in mag alloy 6 spoke wheel for 1996 850.

[Q] Can the stock studs for stock steel wheels be used on the mags?

They seems to fit and tighen fine - just checking.

+1 to what misha says. Adding to that, if you originally used the black regular 'bolt' head wheel lug bolts on steel wheel, I personally don't use them on my alloys. Reason being the steel wheels are much harder and can cause burrs or high spots on the underside of the bolt on the tapered area. When you tighten that on an alloy wheel it causes a pressure point and can damage them. I'm sure others may say go ahead, but at least I would make sure there are no burrs or high points first. AS I have winter and summer wheels, when I used steels for the winters I had a spare set of bolts. Short heads/black steel bolts for the steels (also allowed use of wheel covers) and the longer headed chrome finished lug bolts for summer/alloys

I asked for a picture because my 850 came from the factory with chrome wheel bolts.
There was two types of wheel bolts for these cars....long head chrome and short head regular bolt.
Both are suitable for alloys and steel wheels if they are oem.

I’ve used studs for alloys for winter steelies (OEM everything) and never had any issues but I didn’t know there were multiples lengths.

Ill probably play it safe and get the right studs next time

I believe the shoulder and grip length are identical, but the longer head "chrome" bolts for alloys may not fit under hubcaps on steelies or some alloys like the Argo, Cetus, and Helios wheels.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
