Volvo has a compact crossover in the works

Post by 93Regina »

March 7, 2016: Samuelsson says the automaker will add a compact crossover as its 40 series returns to the U.S. on a new architecture within three years.
...
In addition, Peter Mertens, senior vice president for r&d, said Volvo will sell the full 40 series in the United States -- the sedan, crossover and station wagon.
...
"We will have the next-generation 40 cars absolutely in the U.S.," he said. "I think it was a mistake not having the V40, not being prepared for the U.S. It was a mistake, but it was in that time when the company was in extreme trouble."

Great to see the plug in hybrids are accounting for 20% of new XC90 sales. This will firmly plant Volvo as a carmaker that can achieve unique hybrid technology which is as good if not better than its main rivals.

With a plug in hybrid version using the T8 technology in each platform they offer Volvo will soon become known as one of the hybrid leaders.

I've seen mixed reviews on this topic. But via one UK reviewer, he seemed to object to the noise, and other factors. So, maybe a noise cancellation system needs to be installed.

"You can hear a faint sci-fi whine at urban speeds; on the motorway the V60 is pretty refined, but tyre noise and wind whistle prevent Rolls-Royce rhapsodies of silence."

I think people will get used to the "different" sounds that an electric drivetrain makes.

By the time 2nd or perhaps 3rd generation versions are released hopefully Volvo will have a handle on NVH levels. Perhaps they should buy some hybrid LS440s to see how Lexus do it.

20% Of Sales For The Volvo XC90 Are For The Plug-in Hybrid Version

More significant than that 20% figure, however, might be the fact that the $68,000 2016 Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid version of the car is a “limited availability” model in the US, with only 400 units available for sale in February. Volvo expects to sell even more of the popular hybrid SUVs as production ramps up and they become more readily available"
