96 850 Turbo - Mysterious front-end shimmy solved.

Post by bugs11 »

For the past month or so the front end would slightly shimmy at times and sometimes it wouldn't. Sometimes it would be just a hint of a bobble, other times it was obvious. I thought one of the front tires might be wearing out of round and was planning on rotating the tires, see if that took care of it.
Well when I was checking the air in the tires last week-end I noticed a very slight bulge in the right front tire sidewall. I drove to the county oil recycle collection place (returned a years worth of used oil), no detectable shimmy, when I got there I checked the tire and the bulge in the side wall was larger. Drove home and the car developed a slight shimmy.

Made an appointment for a new tire. The tire had road hazard insurance, so I ended up only paying 25% of the price of new tire.
And now no shimmy, just a nice smooth ride. The tire guy said the side wall was damaged by hitting a curb or more likely a pothole, could of been weeks ago or months ago. He likened it to bruise in the sidewall that never heals, just gets worse and worse over time.

Thanks for posting. Sometimes the simplest causes are overlooked. I know I might have missed that working in my garage on ramps.
