Very rough start and lots of white smoke comes out.

Post by jking4020 »

my 97 850 turbo is barely starting. When it does( I have to hold the key on till it finally does) it pukes out lots of grey/white smoke and runs rough for a second. then its fine. Then at every start off from a stop it pukes out more white smoke. Its got a clogged crank case vent system. Its got wiring issues. ( ABS light, odometer dont work, speedometer fails any time, goes into shift lock at random stop and parks but hit the horn and that goes away). Cleaned MAF sensor and it seemed to start a bit easyer. Need to take in to check codes though. Any ideas out there?

Codes will tell us a lot. When you get them read be sure to post them back in the Pxxxx format. Many of the auto parts store scans try to get cute and diagnose the problem and suggest an expensive part to fix it. In most cases, with a Volvo, that is incorrect information. With the P codes we can generally point you in the right direction.

jking,

I had the same problem with a bad maf(smoke/hard start). I bought an aftermarket cheap one and it ran for a day then it went back to the same problem. I bought a Bosch and it now runs like a champ. But, you should get the codes to determine the exact issue.

Ok. So I did the pcv system check and it's clean. Over 200,000 miles. Crazy! All hoses and the box are clean as a whistle. I can blow through all lines. So I still have rough start issue with tons of whiteish/blue smoke. All the time. At idle and driving. I've checked as much as I can for gunk build up. The IM was off and looked over the whole thing. Throttle body and all vacuumed lines. Nothing is clogged. The PTC or whatever. Nothing. So I'm thinking valves. Anyone have info on this massive oil burning problem. Like a quart every week and a half. Bad sulfur/oil burning smell all the time. I'm baffled because the pcv is clean.

Sounds like you're burning both oil and coolant. Are you sure your HG is okay? Is there oil in the coolant?

Check the turbo for shaft play, if it is good, valve stem seals are probably in need to be changed. I know mine did.

You stated oil consumption, but no coolant/water usage?

I'd be curious to see what the valves all look like.

Probably good to get a compression test done to see what the bottom and top end of the engine are doing before you spend money on cosmetics

As you will pull the plugs when doing the compression test, have a look at the plug ends for their color. That will also be a good indicator of how the engine is running. Keep track of the spark plug locations as it may help identify if a particular cylinder is at fault.

Does your car have a SAS pump and does it run? What can happen when the valve to the pump up by the turbo fails, it allows moisture to drain down into the pump and seize it. When the engine starts to run it sucks the moisture back into the system to a certain extent, and then will stop once the engine has had a good run. Engine codes will confirm this.

I also wonder if this could be caused by a bad coolant temp sensor? But I think the symptoms are more prevalent in cold weather, not sure.

But as was said before, the codes will tell.
