OEM Replacement Seats?

Post by seanf257 »

Hello, I recently bought a 1993 Volvo 850 GLT, which is in remarkable condition considering the age. The biggest flaw is that the drivers seat is in an awkward position where the right side of the seat is forward, while the left is stuck reclined. I tried Robert DIY's fix for the reclining function not working, and it did not pertain to my seat. What I am wondering is if anyone knows of a place where I can get OEM replacement seats for volvos, or if I should just go to a junkyard. Cheers, Sean

Junkyard is definitely your best bet for seats.

You can ship really bulky stuff like this pretty cheap via Greyhound, if you need to get them from a remote PnP

+1 on the junk yard. Check your local pull a part/pick-n-pull/whatever they have locally. Probably the cheapest option for sourcing new seats.

I am not clear on this. Is it the seat base that is not aligned or the backrest?

Is your problem seat a power seat or manual?

Thanks everyone for the replies.
Neil, I believe that I figured out the problem (by the way, it is a powered seat). It seems that the squared bar at the bottom of the back of the seat has popped out of place on the left side, and so it would only move the left side of the seat. For now, I manually adjusted the seat to a normal level, but am currently looking into clips, ties, etc to keep the bar secured in the left side of the seat.

Always better to repair!

If you do have to go the replacement seat route, be aware that there were some changes in the seats over the years. The one that I am somewhat aware of is that the SIPS side bag changed from mechanical actuation to electrical actuation between 1998 and 1999. I have no idea if there were other specific changes in other years of the P80 seats, but maybe other members on here might know.

My leather seats are in good shape, except the front passenger seat is coming unstitched a bit. I was at the junkyard today, and I found a V70 seat with the same color leather on great shape. I didn't buy it, because I first wanted to find out: how hard is it to swap seat skins from one seat to an other?

Not easy but it is possible (I'm sure) I haven't done it or looked it doing it on these but I worked at a shop where we had to put new seat covers on a seat, it took one guy four hours to do two seats, and those were brand new covers which still could stretch and were supple, if it were me (and if possible as in not too far gone) I would look into having an upholstery shop repair the stitching as I'm sure the leather in the yard seats is stiffened up

Thats just my .02 cents

Maybe someone with experience with these seats knows more

I did my driver's seat myself with a cover from the junkyard, and as long as the leather on the junkyard seat is in good shape, you're good to go. Just be careful removing it so you don't pull the hog rings through the "frame" of the seat skin.
It's not terribly hard, as long as you take your time. My best advice is to use zip ties on the new cover, it will save you SO much time and aggravation. I tried using the hog rings, and I got one half way in after about 2 hours, and I'm not even exaggerating. You'll never know the difference with zip ties, other than it didn't take you all day to install them!
