Engine will fail to continue to run V70 2000

Post by flahaye »

Gents,

I bought this old Volvo V70 2000 last november (11/2015).
This car has 365K km and gets me from a to b without issues (all winter).
Now sometimes when I start the engine, the engine will start running for 1-2 seconds and then die.
When I restart it, the engine does not start at all.
I wait a few seconds, re-start the engine and push the gas pedal and then the engine starts.

But sometimes it just starts correctly without any issues.

I found out that my car has no starter motor relay. Not sure if this model needed one.

Any clues?

Thanks

Francois

2000.... Runs for a few seconds and quits?
Smells like an immobilizer issue.

If it is about 1 second then the immobilizer for sure. The typical cure for that is to clean the connector on the antenna ring that surrounds the ignition switch. If it is more than one second, and the difference between one second and several seconds is significant, then the immobilizer becomes less likely.

The immobilizer kills the car pretty immediately.

Also sounds like it could be a bad engine coolant temperature sensor, particularly if it starts again when you floor it. Bad ECT will cause over-rich fuel condition which will cause flooding. The way you deal with the flooding is to put the gas pedal to the floor to start (I know it sounds counterintuitive, but a mecahnic buddy once explained to me that the "gas pedal" is really more like an "air pedal" when it came to clearing a flooded engine).
