Elctronic Air Con Volvo 960

Post by BryanB »

I have just had my air con re gassed, it works perfectly normally but on a recent long journey, after about two hours with the outside temp 26 centigrade it stopped working, none of the controls worked i.e. fan, or temperature, no control was possible to allow any air into the car via air vents other that opening windows.
It was a complete electronic failure, ? is there a control box that can be looked at, if so where is it or will it need replacing.
The air con is now working OK but I want to fix it as continental touring is on the cards.

I'm not sure how much help this will be but I have been working on the AC in my 93 850GLT. I'm guessing the systems aren't that much different. At any rate I had a somewhat similar problem with the blower motor just stopping altogether after working for a bit. I suspected my electronic climate control (ECC) unit in the dash and replaced it to the tune of $650 American. I later discovered the problem was the fan motor resistor. Fortunately the vendor for the ECC unit allows returns. My unit still does not work as it should. I think I need to replace the fan and put in a new fan motor resistor instead of the used one I tried.

I love my Volvo but it does seem these early to mid 90's climate control systems are notoriously unreliable. I'm just glad the rest of the car is far better than that. Good luck and perhaps this will help a little.
