5 days ago tried to start the car and found the battery dead. Jump started it - and noticed the flashing orange up arrow for the first time. Car seemed like it was driving in 3rd gear. Since battery was still under warranty - drove the car back to that shop. They recharged the battery and claimed it was still good. Have had no problems starting the car since then.
The flashing arrow however is still there - with no CEL. I did the shifter back and forth row to clear the contacts - no luck. Then today plugged in an OBDII reader I borrowed - no codes.
Any thoughts on what could cause this and how to clear this flashing arrow? I know maybe it's some sort of transmission problem - but it would seem highly unlikely that it showed up exactly right after the battery died.
One more thing - not sure it's somehow related - but last month I had the throttle body replaced.

Welcome to MVS!
A generic scanner will not read transmission codes. You'll need a Volvo dealer or a shop with Volvo equipment to read that code. Without codes we're just guessing here. In the meantime though check fluid level and condition. If those are both good then you may be lucky and simply need to clean or replace the PNP switch although we won't know for sure until you get the codes read. I suspect the battery is not a contributing factor.

Interesting observation. When my 850 set a transmission code and the flashing arrow, it was a throttle position sensor (TPS) code that was corrected by replacing the TPS. I read the transmission code with an Autel scanner, you should also be able to read them with VOL-FCR.sd-fan wrote: ... Anyway, given that the TPS mounts to the throttle body, and the car is showing no other symptoms, the first thing I would do is check the connector on the TPS. If you have a spare, working TPS handy I would try swapping it in because that is a super easy operation (but you may not, I know ...). Also, sometimes people clean the throttle body with solvent, without first removing the TPS. Then solvent can get into the TPS and can ruin it. I made that mistake once long, long ago.
Still, the best way to go here is to get the codes read as suggested, but thought I would throw that out there.

Did not know that a generic scanner will not read transmission codes. I'll try to get to a shop with Volvo equipment within the next week to see if they can pull codes.
Fluid looked clean with a light brownish color - from what I've researched that's normal for a car with over 150K miles.
Is the TPS easily accessible in a 2000 S70? I've searched the forum, but haven't been able to find a clear photo showing the exact location.

Oops - correct, a 2000 S70 does not have a TPS!
It has the electronic throttle. Disregard, my comment is only relative up to 1998!

This sounds crazy...but could you have accidently bumped the switch near the front of the shift lever? If that occurs then the car will show a UP ARROW and drive like its in 3rd gear. All you would need to do is press that switch again and the Up Arrow light should go out.

Welcome to MVS!
The Sport, Econ, and Winter switch will turn the arrow on if its set to winter mode but it will be a steady arrow not a flashing arrow. OP has a flashing arrow which indicates a fault.

Interesting. I would not have suspected that to be the cause. Thanks for coming back to close out this thread!
