Can a DIM (Instrument Cluster) Failure Mask Other Problems?

Post by packetfire »

I am looking at purchasing a 2004 v70 that has a dead instrument panel.

Can VIDA read the status of the modules that are "downstream" of the DIM even if the DIM is dead (with no instruments, no odometer, no DIM display) assuming that this is the usual problem people have with DIMs, where reflowing solder and/or replacing the onboard voltage regulator will fix the issue?

I can attach a VIDA to the car to read codes, with the DIM plugged in, (and with it unplugged if this is advisable, or with its power fuses removed if this is advisable).

But I worry that without a functioning DIM, I will be unable to read the status of those items that connect to the CEM only through the DIM.

Climate Control Module
Audio Module (Radio)
Steering Wheel Module
SRS Module
Upper Electronics Module
Driver Door Module
Passenger Door Module

The big issue is that I worry that an expensive SRS problem could be masked by a bad DIM.

What are the implications here?

Thanks!
1982 240DL: Drove it 32 years and 1.5 million miles (sold, even still had mint leather!)
2001 v70 2.4T: The most expensive $1500 car I ever bought ("Volvo Turbo" - what an oxymoron!) (sold)
2004 v70: Far less fatally-flawed v70 - It served well (sold)
2010 v50: Smaller, slightly sportier wagon. Its got a spoiler, so I upgraded with sway bars!

DIM just need to be plugged in so you can scan low speed network.

It can cause scanning troubles only if DIM has CAN bus related issues. if this is the case DIM should be removed and CAN bus wires should be short in it's socked. There is 2 green white twisted pairs. Short green with green and white with white.
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer :)
