850 front door glass removal + install

Post by 850 LPT »

Hello everybody,

I was wondering how easy or difficult this job would be. Has anyone ever done it?
Removal of the door panel seems easy, but what's next is what I'm curious about.

As always, any help is much appreciated.

I did it on a rear door once pretty much the same car...the big issue is to get the window lift mechanism to work so you can unbolt it at different locations. I believe once you got into it, it would be self-explanatory. The reason I did mine was because I had to replace the back door on my S70 and didn't want to have to take the new door (window already installed) to have it tinted to match the rest of the car, so I replaced that window...it took all of 30 minutes.

The trick is to get the regulator properly positioned so that you can get to the clips that retain the wheels as they traverse the regulator track. There are two openings in the door that are about 2/3rds of the way up on the inside door panel and they are typically covered with a piece of foam tape. When you peel the tape off you can get to the retainer clips when the windows is lowered to just the right spot.

In a pick-n-pull lot you will need a battery drill to power the regulator which is done by putting a bit into a hole (typically covered with a paper sticker) on the regulator motor assembly. With the drill you can raise or lower window into exactly the correct position. Like most things in a pick-n-pull, it would be much easier to accomplish if they had a battery in the car but they never do. The catalytic converter and the battery are the first things that get pulled and sold off for scrap.

Once the retainers are removed the window will slide right out of the top of the door (after you remove the weatherstrip).

If you want to remove the entire regulator assembly along with it I seem to recall that there are a couple of rivets that you will need to drill out to get the panel that holds the regulator to the door off.

Thanks Lee for the very detailed procedure...

The reason I was asking this question is that I will go and look an 850 5-speed on the weekend which has tinted windows. This car will be handed over to my daughter who is getting her drivers license later this summer, and I don't think it is a good idea for a young driver to drive a car like that. I would especially be worried once she's allowed to drive at night.

My first idea was to replace just the driver and passenger door glass. But I think I will also look into the possibility of removing the tint altogether. I guess I'll just have to see the tint, it's supposedly 35 percent all around.

35% Is perfect, for an old man like me.

Tinting the glass on my daughters S70 was one of the first things I did. She got tired of people, especially guys looking at her so I installed 20%. The young can see better than us, when they are paying attention.

There is no need to remove glass to remove tint, just use a straight razor, then peal, wet, and scrape. It will be off in no time. Leave the rear glass alone or you will damage the heating element.

Thanks Robert. I guess I will see when I get the car.
But I still think driving with tinted windows at night is just more difficult at any age.
