Long story short. I moved a month ago and can't find my keys for my 98 S70 T5, I picked up the car cheap as it needs work. But I can't do any of the work until I find my Keys!!!!! :(
How do I get a new key for it? someone told me there can be a sticker on the windshield with numbers.. Thankfully it has the org. windshield and there is a Volvo sticker on bottom passenger side.
I this what I need, do I write down what's on the sticker and bring it to a locksmith?
any other ideas on what to do? :?:

Thanks for any help!!

Ken

Your Volvo dealer can make a key given your VIN number, usually with proof of ownership required

Did somebody else's post get rolled into yours?

Because that is the answer - all the parts department at the dealer needs is the VIN, and they can cut a key for you. They may require proof of ownership, that is up to them.

If you have more than one dealer to choose from, I would call around and ask what they charge. I have paid as little as $10 but have heard of the charge ranging up to $200.

Hopefully you have got his sorted. If you have any difficulty with Valentine Volvo PM me as I know the people there and may be able to help.

They should be able to get key for you from your VIN and possibly may ask for your Registration to prove ownership.

Fortunately being a 98 you shouldn't have the proximity chip, but just a regular key. Buy 1 and then talk to Ability Locksmith on 52 ST. S.E. as they will most likely be able to cut a key for you for a spare.

I would only get one from the dealer, then I would purchase some off amazon. The Steeles True Value hardware by my home in PA cuts keys for a dollar if you bring it to them

Thank you very much Guys!.
I called Valentine Volvo and after a bit of checking, they said the Key would be $83. + $50 for programing + 1/2 hour labour for a total of around $200.
Plus and I say this with a smile, I would have to get my car towed down there!!
So I called a dealer in Vancouver and they said it may be just a key or like the 1999 it may need to be downloaded (programed) into my car.
He asked coworkers, then he said he would call me back as he had to call Volvo Canada.
He called me back and said it just needs the key and he would have to order it in from California.

Well some Dealers and people can get a little out of joint when told they are wrong.
Should I just call Valentine Volvo back and say a friend at a Volvo dealer in Vancouver called Volvo Canada and said only a key is needed?
Don't want piss anyone off, but I do realize things can get mixed up during mid year or new year changes.
Maybe scot850 can help, pm sent.

99 percent of the cars the dealer has in service require programming. We have to remember as drivers of 20 year old cars we are outliers...

+1 What abscate says. I have replied to Ken basically saying the same. In fairness, they may not know about the year difference, but the software they use should identify that the key needs programming. I have offered to help.

On a '98 you don't have to program the key, on a '99 yes but a '98 doesn't have a chipped key. Even at full retail you should be able to get the key cut for under $50.00. The sticker you are looking for is actually a plate that is riveted onto the dash with the VIN. The same number is on a sticker on the inside of the driver's side door just below the latch and it is much easier to read.

I believe you can even get in touch with FCP-Euro with a Vin# and they can express send you the correct key. As Lee said, it's a '98...if the key is cut right it will work- nothing else needed!
