Open Trunk Door Without Battery

Post by Oka »

Locked the car with remote witht the trunk open. Removed the battery, shut the trunk lid.
You know what's next. You can't open the trunk. I can unlock the front door, sneak into the
trunk, pry open the floor and insert the battery to be able to unlock the trunk door with the remote.

I have a 'super' jumper that can jumper a completely dead car though with the completely drained,
in the cold car. When I purchased it, the manufacuturer warned this setting should only be used in an emergency.
With the battery out of the car, can I connect the jumper to the terminals under the hood just to
see if I can unlock the rear tail door? Anyone done this before?

Any other way to open the trunk than my crude way? This volvo is one am working on.

you'll be alright with the jumper pack, assuming that your battery cables aren't shorted in the trunk.

a 10A battery charger would do the same.
You don't need a bunch of current to run the modules responsible for central locking.

If you did not secure the battery cables, or there's even the remote possibility they are grounded to the chassis don't hook up any power to the jumper points. You'll catch something on fire.

On the S60, there is a little plastic plug to the right of the handle. Remove it and use key in key lock. There must be a like system for the XC70.

Do you mean to say "they are NOT grounded"?

The 2001 XC70s I have don't have that option. Though, it looks like there are marks on both XC70s as a place it would been in that model.

I think what he means is if you disconnected the positive cable to the battery in the back and the end of it is touching the chassis of the car- then it would be grounded and hooking up a battery to open the car could see sparks fly, possibly start a fire too, not to mention all of your electronics in your car getting zapped- it would be something to avoid at all costs. Can you see in your window to check that out- to see if the positive end of the cable is touching a metal surface of your car?

The battery is completely out which is why I got into that predicament in the first place. The car will be sitting for a while. Got it as a fix-a-upper.

When I removed the battery, I just move the cables out of the way. Though I 'always' try to place the removed
cables in a manner not to touch any metal materials for then re-installing the battery. Because I am not 100%
sure, the safest thing I should do would be to unlock the front driver's door, crawl to the back, raise the mat and
the cover lid and place the battery in there. Will be an uneasy fit (for my age). No doubt, this will be the safest
method to avoid 'frying' something in the car in powering the system under the hood without really knowing about
the terminals positions in the battery compartment. I better be safe than sorry.

I sure appreciate all the help I got from you folks. Thank you.

Yes, if you can open one door and crawl to the back, that's what I would do- then just put your key in position II and hook up your battery cables!! After that, you should be good to go!

Why put key in position II ?

Not sure but those are the Volvo instructions if you ever disconnect the battery.
Others who have not done this on the P2 models had electrical glitches until they re-did that part of hooking back up a battery.
Les is more.
