My 2000 S70 has a bearing knock for 2 -3 seconds on start up. I have read about cheap oil filters without check valves causing this condition but the 2000 uses a cartridge filter so I don't see how that could be the cause. Any advice on this?
Thanks,
Tod

Don't race it on starting, change oil regularly and monitor noise for changes.
Meanwhile, drive car like normal.
There is a lot of mythology about engine wear on startup which isn't based on any science.

That used to happen to me, and there is still a light clicking/tapping. It used to be much worse. Switched from the PO's MicroGard oil filter to Mann and it made a load of difference. How an oil filter does that, I have no idea, but it worked.
I get a feeling the sound it coming from my belt tensioner now, though.

What oil do you use in your car? 5W-30, 10W30 or ?
It could be the oil 'O' rings gone hard in the oils pan to engine block seal. When the get old, they don't seal as well as they used to and reduce oil pressure on start up.
Neil.

I have the same noise on startup if my oil level is anything but at the top of the 'OK' zone on the dipstick. My dipstick and tube are still original so I consider the level as completely valid. I'm not terribly worried about it. I've never used anything but Mann or Mahle filter cartridges so I don't know what would happen with a cheaper filter. I have 9 more Mahle Cartridges left so I'll not be finding out soon.
I do figure the oil pickup o-rings are about ready to be replaced on mine after 17 years even though it's only got 110K miles on the clock. I already have the parts and am just waiting for the right time to do it. I'll likely want to change subframe bushings at the same time since the cradle has to drop at least a little when dropping the pan. Those and oil cooler hoses and seals. I should have full access to an auto shop after June. So I think I'll will wait till after that and do that later this summer.
Say that'd also be a swell time to put in an iPD sway bar. Hmmmm.

Have your oil pan o-rings ever been replaced? If not, it's probably time.
