Strange sound in my 1998 Cross Country Volvo.

Post by 1998 Cross Country V70XC »

Hello, I am new to the boards here. I have a question about my 1998 Cross Country V70 XC AWD Volvo Station wagen. Every time the car is having its first run of the day, the engine makes a strange moarning sound for about 30-50 seconds. It always happens every day on its first run of the day. It makes my mom worried, and it annoys the heck out the people in my family who use it. I wanted to know what the sound is. Where in the engine is the sound coming from? Is it something major that I should worry about? Is it something minor that is not to worry about? I really love my car, and I am not yet ready to retire it, so if anyone here can help identify the problem, I can then notify my local dealer at Putnam, and they can fix it. If anyone can tell me anything about the strange sound, I would highly appriciate it. Thank you.

Sounds like the secondary air pump. It draws warm air into the intake at start-up...this ensures a warm as possible start as well as it being an anti-pollution thing. Maybe the blower motor is going bad, or like many others, maybe it has water in it. Tell your dealer to check out your secondary blower or air pump motor....it's under the battery in my S70...not sure about in your car, but probably the same place. Here's a thread on how to replace it with a more economical one. At least this will give you some idea as to what I'm talking about: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/air_pu ... nt_850.php

This sound is actually close to the engine. The sound is on for the first minute then its gone. So to prevent anyone from hearing it, I rev it out by tapping light on the gas with the car in park and then after the minute its gone.

I took it to my local foreign car care facility and they say its a bearing behind the timing belt, and one of the air pumps.
