850 window guide repair question

Post by scot850 »

I'm going to replace the broken LH front rear window guide as the lower mount has fractured as is common on these old parts. The question is not so much on replacing this (long time since I did it last) but I also plan to replace the slider blocks for the window mechanism. Any recommended lubricants for this? Silicon grease, regular, thin oil, silicon oil, lithium grease?

Thanks,

Neil.

i don't really know. But i'd vote for silicone because it seems not to attract dirt as much as regular?grease. I might be wrong though

I guess it is trying to find a balance between something that is thin enough to not wash away, and not too thick it causes a lot of drag and add in the hope it doesn't attract too much dirt.

Turns out all that was wrong with the guide was the screw had dropped out! Anyone need a LHF rear window guide?

I've replaced the missing screw (oh, I wish I had small hands!!).

Now I'm going to tackle the 2 slider blocks. Typical Volvo, why make any job easy......!

I can see I will need to re-connect the battery to drop the window to access the rear slider, but how in the name of all good things do you get to the front one without removing the whole window motor assembly? Is there some hidden hole through which to get to it?

Any input/pictures would be appreciated.

Co after a lot of strong engineering words of encouragement I have managed to replace the rear window slider wheel. I have now found how to access the front wheel, but how on earth do you get the wheel out? It looks like it is jammed on a small metal plate which I assume may be some for of limit control on window open/close operation. I note there a 3 positions for a little tab on the plate to notch into the slider rail to lock into. But how do you remove this and the wheel (which presumably doesn't actually rotate as it is jammed onto the location plate).

So above is the front slider wheel which would appear to not actually move. Is this correct? How do you remove this?

The access to the front slider wheel is hidden behind this piece of foam sheet. I carefully removed this with a flat blade so I can stick it back on when finished.

Again help is much appreciated!

As usual I am too impatient to wait for a reply! So went back to have another look. My worry is always I may break something that is then not repairable!

Before you try to move the limit stop, make sure you check which slot the tab is locked into. There are 2 upper and 1 lower and they are offset. In my case the top tab was locked into the left upper hole. The lower tab does not lock in!

I decided to try and find a way to lift the locking plate tabs to enable me to try to slide the front slider 'wheel' out to replace it.

I used a sturdy hooked pick to pull the tabs out from the slot the top one was hooked into. Using a rod I was then able to force/persuade the wheel and plate out to the right.

This is what the limit stop plate looks like when removed. You are looking at the front face as you look through the hole at it. When I was removing these they naturally fell into the bottom of the door, but at least on the 850 there is a handy access plate at the front bottom of the door allowing you to retrieve the parts.

In the next series of photos, I have tried to show hoe the 2 parts fit together. Looking at the rear of the 'wheel' you can see 2 slots. These slots match the 2 outward facing tabs on the limit plate and the wheel locks into these, so it doesn't actually rotate. The ball end of the front regulator arm is what rotates in the center of the wheel.

In the above photo the wheel rotates down flat onto the plate so both the tabs lock into the matching slots in the rear of the wheel.

To hold the 2 parts together to be able to re-instate the new wheel, I used electrical tape wrapped around the wheel and the plate toward the right hand side as viewed. sing long nosed pliers I was able to position the 2 parts to slide partly back in enough to no fall out. Used a small pry bar to move them in until the locking tabs reached the sliding slot end and then pulled them out and the parts slid in enough to allow then to go far enough to locate and then removed the tape. A little grease helps the process. Make sure you have the tab locked into the correct limit position. There are 3!

Those are weird. Mine were held in with a circlip at the end of the axle that the roller slides onto. They were the wire ring type circlips that were super easy to remove and replace.

Yup weird, they did have the 2 pins in them but I had already pulled them prior to photos.

Thank you so much! Was wondering myself how to get the roller out.
