You should not be able to see any sparking from the ignition System, so a set of new plug wires ( Bougicoird brand) is in order to start. See if that fixes the coil first.

Wow. First of all, you shouldn't have to pop the hood after every drive to make sure there's no fire. If you feel like you do, then there's probably some steps you should take. ;)

- Your coil should not be buzzing when the car's off - mine buzzes a bit when the engine's running, but I have to put my ear down to it to hear it. Also, what do you mean, "well lit up"?
- You should never see flashes of light (arcing) in the spark plug holes. See abscate's advice.
- You probably shouldn't be driving that thing around until coil and wires are fixed - also, check and see what that CEL is about - I've got 10 bucks on misfires. :)

 DO NOT drive that car until you get a new coil. Just DON'T do it. Nevermind what Nike tells you. It's absolutely an issue. There are several options when you replace it, but I personally recommend going with either an OEM coil, or the MSD option that iPD has ( https://www.ipdusa.com/products/5054/11 ... il-upgrade ) - both options have worked very well on my 850s.

Oh, and did I mention that you shouldn't drive that car until you change the coil? In fact, you should probably go outside and disconnect your battery right away.

Well, anything visibly glowing where there's fuel and oil in the immediate vicinity is pretty serious.
That said, the most likely scenario is your coil letting go and simply melting into some goo and scorched metal, but you never know. There's dust, old leaves, old oil and whatnot, which is all to happy to burn given a few hundred degrees of glowing metal available. :) In addition, uncontrolled arcing is also a fire hazard. So while you might just end up stranded, you could end up stranded and on fire, which is less desirable. ;)

Changing the coil is a 10-minute job at the most, so there's really no excuse. ;)
