AC sucked up plastic bag

Post by fourteen2hands »

Hi,
Yesterday we made a quick stop at 711 in the v70. Since it was so hot we had the AC cranked on recirculate. I put the drink bag on the passenger floor and when I pulled the drinks out, in an instant the plastic shopping bag was sucked up under the dash. It sounded awful like when something gets stuck in the vacuum. I was able to shut the system off with in a few seconds but the bag was long gone.

The lower passenger trim panel has been missing since I bought the car. I took a look today with a flash light and could not find any trace of the bag. I believe I was sucked into and stuck in the blower motor.
Should I try to take the blower motor off?
Anywhere else I should check?

Thanks

Blower motor removal - shouldn't be too bad on a 2000 - I think its more P80 than P2

I too believe it might have got stuck into the cabin blower @ 0:25 you can see inside the blower. the plastic trim under the wipers is attached with 4 nasty clips. You need to remove 2-3 of them, keep your hand or a bag under the clip while pushing all the way down the center pin

For more access, you may want to remove the cabin blower unit but once rear small torx screw is very difficult to access (I use an electric screw driver helps a lot to speed up this job)

Your car should be a P80 bodied car from 98-00. The 99 and 00 are easiest to work on for this job. As you have the under tray off already, I suggest carefully (old plastic gets brittle) remove the 6 or so Torx (star shaped) screws from around the glove box liner and carefully pull it out. A hand pushing from the back from underneath will help. Careful as some of the glove box liners have a couple of extra screws at the back of the liner.

If you have no screws at the back you are getting it easy, as the ones that have, have a support bracket that you have to bend out of the way to remove the motor and then try to straighten to the correct position to refit the screws.

There are 4-5 Torx screws around the body of the motor and the 2 hardest to get to are on the RHS at about 3 o'clock.

Once those are out the motor needs a little wiggling to get it out, but watch the wiring, it can easily be removed this should then give you plenty of room to get into this area to remove the bag. My only worry is if you had the A/C on re-circulate, I can't remember if the floor air outlet is before or after the A/C evaporator. Hopefully it is before or there is a much bigger can of worms!

Re-install is the reverse. Always be careful removing and installing the fan motor as the 'cage' which spins has balance weights on it that can be dislodged if you are very rough.

Good luck!

Neil.
