Scored an 98 S70...not running.

Post by stephansvolvo »

Just scored a white 98 S70. I paid a few hundred for this non-running beast. Not sure that my wife is super happy about it. Although if I can get it running for cheap it will become a family car. I figure I'll get it home tomorrow and trouble shoot it. The little time I spent on it seems to maybe be a fuel issue. Timing belt is solid, it has been pretty well taken care of and about two months ago as the PO was coming Down the street she said it acted funny, pulled into the driveway and wouldn't restart. It cranks but won't catch. The battery was dead so trying to get enough juice through jumper cables from my v70 was pretty pointless. Fuel, spark, compression, right? If it needs an engine it becomes a parts car.

I'll let you all know...

Pictures! :D I've always wanted to take on a restoration-ish car, but I don't have the space, time or money for it. Right now. ;)

Good luck! I am working on a 97 850 NA as the same idea/hobby car, but now my brother wants it for my niece as her first car it is becoming a full time job! Good luck and hopefully it is something simple and not a failed timing belt.

I'd pull the cover and just double check before trying to start it. I've heard the, 'It was running fine and then stopped..." so many times and it was down to a failed timing belt.

I'd hope though it is just a fuel relay or pump which would be a real score!

No doubt! The lady was all up in my grille when I was putting tools on the car prior to purchase. I walked away from it then she called the next afternoon with an offer I couldn't refuse, well if nothing else it's a donor car for parts.

Well I pulled the timing cover and its tight and 20k old. Charged up the battery and with juice crank it a couple of times. Checked fuel at the rail and its there. I pulled the spark plugs....horrible! Both cord and plugs. As I was pulling number 3 I noticed moisture on it. I looked back at the other two and saw that number 2 had some on there as well. I happened to look into the well and I noticed there was some shinyness. The dip stick oil looks more tannish not black that I thought it's would be.
I threw a set of new plugs in to see if it would start but nothing. I repulled the number 3 to do a compression test and noticed moisture in the new plug. I pulled all plugs blew and dried them off.
Is this a headgasket issue? Is the engine toast?

Can you tell what the moisture on the plugs is? Fuel? Coolant? If it's fuel, you may simply have it flooded. That could possibly be due to a failed ECT and/or thermostat which could be causing the engine to think it is too cold and over enriching the mixture for starting. For kicks, get the plugs dried off and with a fully charged, healthy battery crank on it for a bit with the gas pedal to the floor. If it starts, change the ECT and thermostat.

Body and interior look to be in pretty good shape. Probably worth poking around a bit more to try and figure out what gives.
